Well Mrs. Colorado1135 filled one of her buck tags sunday morning. this buck was standing 20 yards from where tom's buck was when he shot it, and she shot it from the same spot. We've taken 6 deer from that spot in the last 8 years when we've been fortunate enough to draw tags. Oldest youngin' shot a coyote from that spot on friday at 465 yards with the same rifle. 308 throwing 168 gr berger VLD's.

Well my best hunting partner finally got a buck. He’s put his time in there is no doubt about that. Opening morning in WI I heard a shot from his direction at about 7:10, only about 1/2 hr after shooting light. I quickly got a text that said “I just dropped a buck.” He called me a few minutes later and said it went right down. I told him to watch it for 1/2 hr because they do weird things. Well it did weird things...it tried to get back up after 20 minutes. But, fell back down before he could get a shot. It was dead when I go to it. We got it cleaned up and drug to his stand to finish the morning hunt. This is what I walked up on. Pulling out of the tangle. Happy camper Gun pic. Shot with his grandpa’s Remington 7600, 30-06 pump. 150gr bullets. He shot it really really high, through the spine. He said he was aiming for the heart. We thought that was a bit odd. But then I got to thinking, he missed a bucks at 60 yards in MN second weekend. He’s a great shot and that’s not normal for him. Then we were talking and I asked if he remembered when he rested his gun on the wall at the cabin. It slid down the wall and smacked the concrete floor. That can’t be good for the scope...it wasn’t. We checked the rifle and it’s 9” off, high, at 30’ish yards. That would explain the miss and high shot on the buck.

We have another first tonight. My buddy’s son, and Jack’s good friend, Owen scored his first deer this afternoon at 2:15. He missed one earlier this week. So, we’re pretty fired up in camp tonight!!
Celebrating with chicken wings and popcorn. Lol

Congrats to all who got their deer.
Camp Isabella was a deerless adventure this year. No deer were even seen. Wolves were all over the area every other day and the deer vanished. We had 60's opening weekend, 2" of rain Monday and then 10" of snow Tuesday night. Did I mention the wolves. They took down a doe Friday night about 200 yards from camp, we found the head picked clean.
On the plus side we had the oldest [13] and youngest [5] granddaughters in camp for 6 days. A good time was had by all.
We celebrated the 13 year old birthday in camp as we had done when she was 1,2,3 and 4.

We celebrated the 13 year old birthday in camp as we had done when she was 1,2,3 and 4. I hear this more and more, it’s pretty interesting. I was always led to believe that the wolves had the upper hand in the dead of the winter when we had significant snow pack. What I’m hearing these days would lend me to believe the wolves eat deer all the time and many of these areas in NE MN will never have decent deer, or moose’s number ever again until we get some proper wolf management. Do folks agree?

I agree somewhat. They always eat deer, it’s their main food. Certainly is much easier when they can chase them through the snow or on hard pack.
Growing up and hunting that way, they’ve always been around. There’s no doubt they’ll clear out an area for deer. Sometimes it takes years for them to come back.

My boy got his first buck this morning. we thought we were going to be done for the season so he was going to punch his any WT tag on a doe after passing several bucks all season. So he dropped the hammer on this big doe at 416 yards. perfect shot she didn't go 50 yards from the berger VLD. moments later a buck comes trotting from that general direction but on the opposite ridge straight at us, he dropped into the valley and after several whistles he stopped on the other side briefly. He dropped the hammer again at 285 yards. buck took a few staggered steps and was still up so I said hit him again. he fired a second time and the buck staggered a few steps and layed down. moments later he dropped his head and the hugs and shouts started. We are super glad he had his apprentice doe tag to put on that doe so he could shoot the buck! what a great day! Buck was a 5x5 and had double brow tines on both sides, one was broken off though. couldn't be more proud.

Anybody in MN hunting with the muzzle loader this year? I'm done for the year as far as rifle hunting. I may go after a bird or two yet. We're going to head back up and look at a few new areas we thought looked interesting. Hoping to get away from the crowds that seemed to be around this season.
