I have mentioned before that I have one made in the month I was born.

It likes a 180 Partition and 64 grs of H-4350 for about 2950 fps from its 26” barrel.

Navlav8r thanks , I am waiting on dies but maybe can deprime with a universal deprime die , neck size with a 300 weatherby die and load a few to try that load. How many rds will the magazine hold 2 or 3? MB

Bob I it holds three.. I have had several of these rifles, and loved them all... But someone with $$ loved them more than I.. Great guns.. I had a very accurate load with factory 150 gr. Rem ammo.. You have a fine rifle there.. Wish I had not let go of mine, but at my age I need to sell more than buy, but that is not going to happen.. When I was a kid, one of the very best hunters in my area bought one of these at close out prices.. He was a knowledgeable man on limited means.. He killed a ton of game with it.. In those days I was an 06 man.. But after seeing some of the work Dick did with that H & H made me a believer.. Another of my pals from my youth was an old Camp Perry shooter.. We talked about the caliber one day and I told him O'Connor said it wasn't much better than an 06.. He said well it is better.. He had shot it quite a bit.. so enjoy.. Wish I had mine back.. Keep me posted on how things go for you and this old rifle.. I think I neck size with the Wea. die and loaded with those till I got dies.. Good luck!!

I have one. I love the vintage rifles. I topped mine with a Leupold VX3i CDS last summer. Harvested a cow elk with it at 465 yds standing broadside.
180 Speer Grand Slams over 68 grains of IMR4350 at 3100fps. The rifle loves that load. I suspect I could replace the Grand Slams with Nosler Partitions PP (are they even still available ?) with the same results.

Who's SPS ?
I'm gonna have to find something. I only have 30 Grand Slams left to load up. I posted a WTB for the GS's a while ago in classifieds. No luck so far. One fella was good enough to offer some 165's. But I need the 180's because that what the Leupold CDS is built for.

These are great rifles! Only thing I might suggest is to be sure to keep the chamber clean (which it should be with any rifle) as the 721's have a small extractor which was corrected on the M700 when it came out. I observed two instances of two different 300 H&H 721s fail to extract a fired casing, both at inopportune times. The first was a shot on a grizzly that had come to close to a campsite and the second was the first shot on a moose. Both situations worked out alright but could have been bad. That was 50 years ago. Great rifle, great caliber! I had both a .300 and .375 H&H in Win model 70s back in the early 70s and sure wished that I had kept them. I guess at the time I thought I needed the money worse.

I enjoy my Rem 721 in 300 H&H! Its birthdate in '53 & yet in quite nice condition!

The single large caution, the same trigger problem as far better known/publicized with the Model 700. Remington had a recall many moons ago for the 721/722 series. I bought mine quite inexpensively as the dealer had neither heard of such nor any idea how to determine malfunction nor, whether repairl (Me either!) Price adjustment' with presumption of "potentially unsafe". I've since learned the trigger repair also facilitated the Winchester style "three position safety" function. Such with intermediate position ability to cycle the bolt for unloading as the trigger remains locked. Mine lacks that function; eg, presumably original. Now sporting a reminder tag with cautionary info.

Re the extractor problem referenced above. Believe it was popular at one time to replace the original extractor with a Sako model. Don't know the incidence numbers of problems, but my guess it wasn't significant. Such might, as suggested above, to do with maintenance and also suggesting perhaps over-pressure loads IF causing chamber sticking of brass???

Bit of incidental history if interested: Remington announced Model 721 & 722 in latter forties era. Sold for between $20% - $30% less that main US competition, Winchester Model 70. Newer technology, plainly less expensive to produce rifle. "Totally tubular" smile receiver & stamped parts as feasible; a viable - moreover visionary design. That as Winchester's hallowed "Pre '64 design of the latter thirties finally succumbed to "too expensive to produce". Model 70 elegance that we so appreciate today, as death knell! That with Win teetering decade+ as Rem chugged along! Latter fifties, Rem side excursion with their largely aesthetically upgraded Model 725 and then sliding smoothly into their winner Model 700 in '62. Here, a Win 'pre '64' 70 fan paying due respect!

My only Model 721, 300 "Mag", appreciated for the entirely nice rifle it is! Thanks for an interesting Thread and "fair mention" of a worthy, under-appreciated rifle!
Just my take. smile smile smile

Well the older I get seems like my interests are getting more retro. My RCBS dies showed up today from Natchez shooter supply ordered friday before last about 7.5 days. I have 2 boxes of Hornady brass waiting to happen 40 rds of RP and 10 rds of Bell. Some where around here I have some 180 grain Bronze pt expanding bullets ,180 grain protected pts,180 PSP corelokts, 180 nbt's and 200 gr npt's.so I will have some fun with it. MB

I had just gotten my 721 in 300 H&H from safe queendom. Mine is a throw back with a Lyman 48 and a Sheard bead front blade. Works very well. I got mine with five or six boxes of Remington brass. My dies had been loaned out and were lost. Got some NOS dies off Amazon. These old guns are a prize. My current loads are with the new Shooters World 4350 and 165 gr. Sierra's.

I just bought one last month from a fellow here in Canada on-line. The price was too good to pass up on. I later found out that it was a BDL grade with checkering which is a bit of a rare bird. It came to me in original condition except missing the factory pad. I had a 1950s vented JOSTAM pad here that was NOS so sent it all away with the rifle to have the pad installed, trigger cleaned up and adjusted and have the action glass bedded. I think I will top it with an old VXIII 1.5x5 gloss in weavers when it comes back.

Haven't shot mine yet, but have lots of H4831sc here and some 180gr NPs for the classic moose load.

I had one. I liked it. I traded it for a Brno model 21h in 7X57 and while the 721 was nice and accurate and I got it for a song (250) it more than made up for it as I got 500 dollar trade value out of it.
