As the title says I’m wondering what a ballpark weight is for a squad designated marksman setup.

A military one or one for yourself? What caliber? Some use 762 and others 556.

It's not too hard to get a reasonably light rifle, itself; all the really extra weight comes from how big & heavy the optic & mounts are, especially with 5.56.

My rendition is 10 lbs, 14 oz with optic and a full magazine. That's a 20" HBar . Add another pound if you use a bipod.

I’m thinking 556. I have a lighter 16”’carbine and a predator profile WOA. I’m trying to get a perspective on the approximate weights between a patrol and marksman setup in that caliber. I not trying to make replicas but understand what an appropriate weight range is for each set up.

For a marksman set up I’d assume that top magnification range for the scope would be in the 8-10 magnification range?

FN has a DMR that they list at slightly over 7lbs and Daniel Defense's MK12 is 7.4lbs. Add on optics and mount and you'll know generally. Both have 18in barrels.

For reference,

This is a Vltor MUR upper, Aero lower, FA BCG, Magpu STR stock & 18" WOA, fluted SPR barrel with SLR 13.7" Ion Lite HG.

With a NF 3-10x44 SHV in AD Recon mounts, it weighs 8.5 lb as I recall from memory..................if you want it exact, I can re-weigh it again as it's been a while.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like 8.5-10.5 lb is an acceptable range with optic.

My scoped 16” pencil barreled guns weigh 8.2 lbs but they have SOPMOD stocks and BUIS’s.

My 18” SPR scoped, weighed just over 9 lbs. My 17” SPR weighed just under 9 lbs.

I imagine any 20” DMR would go 10 lbs.

Of course if someone wanted to chance a Leupold in an Aero mount and no BUIS’s, you could shave a pound off those weights easily. My 16” pencil barrel guns weigh around 6.5 lbs. with red dots instead of scopes and they all have BUIS’s.

I have one I put together from aero precision parts and a fluted barrel from Midway USA and an A2 butt stock. I don't have a scale but with an Aero scope mount and a 4-12 Nikon it goes 10 lbs easy. That is unloaded. And a cheesy nylon sling.

For a AR Stoner barrel it does shoot pretty good. Not much recoil.

kwg.
