I have a line on a solid 2003 Ford Excursion V-10 4x4 for $3k.

I have a line on a Cummins 12v for $1,800.

Anyone ever done this swap?

Obviously I will dial up the Cummins while it is not installed.

Either keep the RE47 and Stage 3 rebuild or interface with the existing Ford... figure between the adapter and torque converter (big RPM difference)... rebuilding the RE would make the most sense probably?

I had a Eaton Fuller 6 speed behind a Cummins once (F-650) and it was PERFECTION... but that EF6 is one big mofo.

Anyone ever done this swap... words of wisdom or caution?

The whole truck will get refurbished after the mechanics are right.

Figure I can resell the V-10... value? Anyone know? $500?

Total budget?

Including refurbishing... maybe $25k

Cheaper than new I reckon.

I had a 2001 Excursion years ago... they are nice.

Many years ago there was a place in Ogden, or Logan, Ut. that did these conversions. At the time it was around $12 or $14 K, with them supplying the Cummins. With you supplying the engine, I think you should get in under $20 K.....though I may be way off! I considered similar about 20 years ago! memtb

I do not endorse this project.

I’d forget about the project and buy a boat. You’ll be money ahead in the end.

Whatever you do....good luck.

I had a boat when I lived in Coconut Grove and Key Largo...

Rebuilt after Andrew chewed on her a bit...

I'm sure it can be done. I eat lunch with a guy who has done a dozen cummins swaps. I'm not real sure what gen cummins he prefers, but i'm pretty sure its the P-pump mechanicals and older.
I'ld ask him for you, but he is pretty well only face to face. He wont even text. He will read them, but refused to send them. Hell of a mechanic though. Good luck. Do as much homework as you can.

Cash, Nice job on the boat!

Good luck on the project and post pics if you do that swap. 👍

I have a built auto in a hot 12v and a 7.3 excursion with a built 4r100.

I'd choose the 4r100 over the re myself.

A few resources you will need:

Destroked

Diesel Conversion Specialists

Swap A Cummins into Anythinng

I've thought about doing such a conversion on a '78 F250 Crew or Super Cab with a 12V Cummins for quite some time. If you hire it out and are supplying the rebuilt engine and a conversion kit, you should be able to easily get the swap done for under your budget.

Good luck.

EDIT: Here's some interesting build threads and a couple of articles:

'74 F250 Cummins Crew Cab

'69 Cummins Conversion

Betty Turns Oil Burner

Completed '77 Conversion

'78 F250 Completed Conversion

That or pay someone to kick em in the nuts for half the cost and he'd still be in better shape.

Buddy had a Cummins conversion on an F350 with 6.0l diesel.
Guy in Waynesboro VA specializes in this conversion. I can get you his info if you’re so inclined. If nothing else might be some good advice from someone with a lot of experience.

Know a guy that stuck a duramax in an ‘05 (?) 3/4 ton suburban and
Another buddy is getting ready to do a diesel swap in a 70’s FJ40.
That’s actually one I could get behind.

I’d rather have a factory diesel 70 series land cruiser.

What would the value of it be after that investment?

Maybe half that?

Was there a time that Ford worked with Cummins?
Or is my memory failing?

Good links fellas... THANKS!

I currently have three Cummins trucks (and have had many before... 25+/-).

Only had one Excursion... but loved everything about it.

Big decision now (if I proceed) is the trans and TCase.

Sticking with a built RE seems easiest, but I'll start asking the pros more questions.

SEEMS like the full Mopar drivetrain will make the most sense.

Heavy hauling... not really... other trucks for that.

Hard use... absolutely.

Yes... lots of F-650s came with Cummins.

I had a 26' F-650 box truck with an Eaton Fuller 6 speed. She could stay in that Cummins power band RPM like a champion. Never had a better drivetrain in my life... for work.
