haverluk, I used to live on the Maryland side of the Potomac and spent an obscene amount of time catching those cats. I always used clam snout as bait. Holy fugk was it fun. Congrats again.

Thanks for the tip ‘flave! I will have to give clam snouts a try sometime. I swear that fishing on the river when I was a young barracks rat kept me out of a good deal of trouble. A case or two of cheap beer and a lawn chair was a great way to spend the time.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

haverluk, good fish. i have fish the potomac years ago. we fished near fredericksburg at fairview beach. first time me and a buddy went over there to fish we caught so many in a few hours that we were worn out. we never caught anything over 10-12lbs. clam snouts and black shrimp was the best bait back then. we go down to the pamunkey and fish a few times a year now. we catch mostly eater size fish but every once in a while we'll hook a 40lber or so. fun fight. they are catching some huge fish on the rivers in va. i have a picture of one caught last spring on the lower pamunkey that weighed in 101.the james has been producing fish that big for years.
we mostly use cut eel and fresh cut shad for bait now.

Awesomeness!
I think a pre buttermilk bath, before frying helps cat fish taste their best!
I never tried chicken breast! Gonna have 2 this year!
Great post!

Used to make a kind of clam chowder with catfish and potatoes added.
Catfish cubes and potato chunks or slices... potatoes cook by mass so nothing too big.
I recall it being kinda good.
Save me a catfish Matt... and I will try it again and post a recipe.

Amazing catch. To say the least that had to impress those kids. Do y'all have any flathead catfish up there in Virginia. They usually only take live bait. Most folks around here want flatheads to fry but my kids prefer blue cat. We mostly catch ours with hoop nets and trot lines. We also throw back the big blues.
