Recently purchased a old redfield peep sight for my 22 magnum over 410.

This installs on the grooved barrel. I have it set in the lowest position and still shooting 8 inches high at 50 yards. My calculations show I need a 3/8 inch higher front sight. That is going to be one tall front sight. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I remember putting one on a 24 way back in the early 80's. Back then I got a little riser from Numrich and a longer scew. I don't remember it being that high, seems like it was about an eighth of an inch, but it was a long time ago.
I would find a longer screw and cut some shims to get my height, then file out and drill a little spacer, if I were doing it today.
Good luck,
Bfly

Believe this was posted a while back by 260RemGuy:

"Enclosed in box with Redfield RE-24 receiver sight is a "riser block" 0.210" high, 1 12/32" long. Remove factory front sight, and place "riser block" on barrel lining up hole in block with hole in barrel, place factory front on top of "riser block" and attach with screw furnished (screw 9/16" long, 3-48 thread)."

Also, Lyman offered a high front replacement sight for the "rimfire" 24's. Their model 22 repl sight sat in the footprint of the factory sight and used the factory screw. These are commonly found behind the ears of most unicorns. This sight was likely offered byLyman to pair up with their 53D side mounted peep.

Williams did or does make a peep sight for the m24 that sits low enough so that the stock front sight works just fine. It does require two mounting holes on the left side, but mine works great and nearly doubles the sighting radius. I tried a scope, but that made the shotgun barrel near worthless for moving targets. The peep on a m24 is the best setup that I’ve found.

I think you may have made a calculation error. Assuming the sight radius is 24" (just a guess on my part), effecting a change in point of impact (POI) of 8 inches at 50 yards would require a change in front sight height of:
0.107, or about 7/64.

Similar triangles:
8 / (50 x 36) = Z / 24
Solve for "Z"

Of course, you need to plug in the correct sight radius for your gun.

You're welcome. Happy to help. I just stumbled across this. I don't spend much time on the Combination Guns and Drillings forum.

Kelly,

I assume that sight is no longer in production?

I inherited a .22 Magnum over 20 Gauge. I haven't decided what to do with it. If I hang onto it, with my eyes, a peep sure would be a good thing!

Still looking for a peep sight that will mount in the barrel grooves. Many of the suggestions seem to be obsolete, but... check these out:

Tech SIGHTS are nice products, but I don't think they make one to fit those narrow grooves on the M24 rimfire barrel.

The redfield is no longer in production. I bought mine off ebay and paid as much for it as the rifle would have cost new. It wouldn’t tighten up on the grooves so I had to add a shim in between the tightening screw and the dovetail piece that moves to tighten in the grooves. Solid now and once I get front sight shimmed, I will be hunting with it.
