I just picked up a pound of H4895 at the store this morning after posting that..

A very versatile powder that’s been around a long time. Best powder in a 17 Remington and 35 Whelen. And works great in myriad other rounds.

It’s not new and “improved” so it probably doesn’t interest many of the newer generation of shooters. Just us dinosaurs that stick to our old favorites.

Do have some IMR 4320 left, and have been looking. Damn !

Have been using 4320 for a long time pushing 150 gr Hornadys from my '60 Savage 99 Featherweight... 300 Savage. Shoots pretty consistent groups for a light lever gun. Started using it cuz my reloading manual showed good numbers with it.

Sporterized a old Mauser & kept it in 7 x 57. Got the new barrel 'matured' by now. The 4320 pushed 150 gr Winchester factory bullets into 1" <--->2" groups. Pushed 150 gr Partitions into 1"----when i was any good. Mild loads. Used the 4320 here cuz i had some on the shelf for the Savage.

Have been using it in my 223. Works good. Will really miss it.

Ran thru my powder measure pretty good for a stick powder.

Gettin kinda old n creaky to be deer hunting like i used to do. So maybe i just dont work up loads for those oldies above. Use what i have.

Have a pre-64 Model 70 in 270 which shoots 130 gr stuff very well using IMR 4350. We have a lot of miles together. lately its been a Closet Queen. But when hunting season is about to start............ i get near it and i have feelings of guilt......

During this quarantine sometimes I mess with these rifles and take a walk down Memory Lane. Maybe hum a few bars from THE WAY WE WERE. My bride gives me 'that look.' I tell her that the gun powder and primer shortages, et al..... have several causes... and that THEY are out to GET ME. The FBI. The CIA. The military/industrial complex. The Dems. The GOP. The space aliens.

More of 'that look' from my bride who tells me she thinks i am paranoid.

I remind her that just because THEY are out to GET ME doesnt really prove I am paranoid. no matter who you are, SOMEBODY is out to GET YOU.

I just go back to humming. I have a lot to hum about.

IMR 4320 was either discontinued or very hard to get for a long time about thirty years ago. I substituted IMR 4064 in some .338-06 loads. Accuracy and velocity were about the same and the powder charge weight was very close. I haven't bought any IMR 4320 since. Same experience with .22-250 loads. Today, I would also try H4895.

If you aren't loading small necked cases.. like 17 Fireballs and 17 Rem, or 20 caliber...

then IMR 4895 is a good substitute.... just add a grain or so to your load and it should be pretty much the same velocity as 4320...

4320, 4895 and 4064 overlap so much, I can see from an accountant's or manufacturing engineer's perspective you're really duplicating the same end results...

I don't agree with the powder being discontinued after being in product since the 20s or 30s ( I read on Wiki)...

I tend to use tried and true, vs latest greatest....which I am in the minority with that attitude...

I’ve used it in 17 Rem, 250-3000 and 223. Still
Using it in a 223 gas gun.

I still have 6# left. Bought all my local shop had back when I heard it was being discontinued. Still, I’d like to have found more or better yet, an 8# jug.

The main difference between 4320 and 4064 is the way it flows so nicely thru a powder measure.
The late Jack O conner liked 4320 for that very reason, and he is the one who convinced me to try it.
Once i did i never went back to using 4064.

Its one of the few powders I've never tried.
