Funny you should ask that. I just recently noticed that some writers refer to the first ten years of the 21st century as "the aughts." Seems quaint, don't it?

That's a big deer where I come from.

I have taken more deer with my 30-06 than all of my other cartridges combined, I think. That is really just a result of never owning anything but a 30-06 for a long time. If I could only have one rifle, it would be chambered in 30-06.

Re: Creedmoors, I killed a doe with one (something I don't like to do but it was the last day of the season and I wanted the meat.). After hunting with the Creedmoor all of last season and for a few days this year, I have found it utterly useless on bucks.

I believe the aught six needs more time for proper evaluation. I’m not one to jump on the “next new thing”; Creedmoors be damned.

The .30-06 is OK. The biggest strike against it as far as I'm concerned is that it won't fit in a Winchester 94 or Marlin 336.

Thanks for bringing this up. I sold my creedmore two years ago, I think I will replace it with an aughtsix. Pretty vanilla caliber that shoots the lights out of any North American critter.

Any suggestions on a good hunting rifle? Is the Belgian Winchester any good? May a CZ?

Tweener cartridge if there ever was one. To little for elephants and too big for ducks.
I don't see the point.
I'm going to buck the crowd and stick with my .264 Creedmoor.

Just right for everything in between
Always was, always will be

It has been used, successfully, on both poaching, and culling elephants.
And, MANY years ago, I killed a canada goose with one - took his head off - NO meat damage.
Range 60 - 80 yards IIRC

Some people just feel the need to look for something new and exciting to them, like new calibers, green hair or facial piercings.

My first rifle that was bought and owned by me was a 7mm RM around 1971 when I was 19. Within a couple of years I traded for a .30-06. In about 1978 I bought a .243W and after a couple of tracking jobs on big bucks hit a little far back I returned to the .30-06. For me it works fine out to over 400 yards if I have a rest and know the range. I would require a rest and knowledge of range for any caliber at longer ranges as would most if not all shooters. The .30-06 works and all the work on loads has been done by others. In normal times the components are easy to find. We own a few other calibers that mostly were gifts from an elder cousin. My daughter uses a .243W that I bought for her when she was 9 and now 19 years later she still uses it to good effect (22 deer and numerous hogs) so I sure can't say the .30-06 is the "only" cartridge but it's good and hard to beat for an all round rifle.

What do you consider a exciting caliber and why?

The aught-6 is a great round falls just behind the 2-sebenty in terms of usefulness.

.........Me too!....The problem is not with the 30-06 itself. It has many attributes. The problem is, even if you wish to call it a problem, is with those who tout it as the do all and end all of the 30 caliber cartridges; like no other 30 caliber cartridge should exist in their minds?....When within their post or post headline they state,,,"nuff said" or some other short comment that implies end of conversation, they are basically saying that they are biased towards the 30-06 and that nobody should own another 30 caliber round and therefore maybe bend over to their wishes?....NO! the 30-06 is not the do all and end all of all 30 caliber rounds.
