Well, Col. Townsend Whelen did say the 30-06 is never a mistake. I see absolutely no reason a disagree with with him. As a matter of fact, If I'd just stayed with the 30-06 and not bought ll the guns I did, I'd have saved a hell of a lot more money. But, like every other rifle loony I played with various other cartridges for hunting from the .223 up to the .35 Whelen. But there was always one rifle that tagged along on every hunt hunt and that was an old J.C. Higgins M50 in 30-06 which has been my back up rifle for more years than I care to to count. I could gleefully sell off every other rifle I own today but that old beat up M50 would be the one to stay. Probably, if I kept a tally on how many deer that rifle has taken, it would be a lot more in total then all the other rifles I've used since. I hunted with it exclusively from 1954 until 1973 and from 1954 to 1967 it was in an area where I could take two deer and usually did.

In1973 I switched to a Remington 660 for the light weight. At the time I was a very heavy chain smoker and where I hunted at higher altitude that 06 was just too heavy. I finally quit in 1975 and by 1977 the 06 seems to have lost weight so got used on a few more hunts. It's been on every elk hunt I've done as back up and in 2011 took my elk. I used it because the scope on my .35 Whelen lost the crosshairs. They must have gone into hiding as they sure weren't in the scope.

I'll always have two rifles that will never go. One is an old M94 Winchester 30-30 that I killed my first deer back in 1949. Took a few more with it as well. The other is that old M50 Higgins 30-06.

Old Col. Whelen was right. The 30-06 is never a mistake.

My. M98 '06 shoots 1" groups at 300 yards, if I can hold it steady enough over a good rest, with factory ammo - various brands. I wonder what it would do if I hand-crafted for it. The only downside is it weights about 11 lbs. But the recoil is very manageable.

I own a Browning X-Bolt .30-06, which I bought several years ago in anticipation of a hunt to S. Africa. With my handloads using the Barnes 165 gr. TSX bullet, this rifle is sub-MOA accurate. In SA, I took a half-dozen of the 'tiny' antelopes, all with minimal hide damage from the TSX. I spent a day hunting for a Burchell's zebra- didn't shoot one, but if the opportunity had arisen, there were no doubts that the same round I used for the little antelopes would have been entirely adequate and up to the job.
The versatility of the '06, with a wide combination of available bullets, is just very hard to beat, let alone equal.

The range I use only has 50/100/200 yard targets so I don't know what size groups mine will shoot at 300 yards. I did shoot a big sow in the neck at 275 yards though and the bullet hit exactly where I aimed. I don't like to shoot my stalker on the bench because it is very light and is about the limit of recoil that I can handle.

We all need at least one 0-6 for when everything else fails.

If you cant get it done with a .30-06, you have no business trying to do it.

I have a 17 HMR. My other magnum cartridge is the 30-06.

The problem with the 30-06 is that these new writers for the gun magazines can't come up with anything new so they need a new caliber to help their career along. That's why some feel is boring. Kinda like the guy that trades his wife of many years in on a younger one.

You know what is really cool? Being able to own and use almost anything you want.

Had a M1903-A3, but it wandered off w/ a family member.

May replace it w/ a M700 re-Bbl.

Isn’t the 30-06 just a longer, less efficient cased 6.5 Creedmoor with less aerodynamic and fatter bullets that fall faster and don’t buck the wind as well?

Had an ADL in 1977 that was my second rifle, the first being a Win 30WCF...Wish I never sold it...I have had many since then but I still miss that one...

Pretty hard to find a better caliber for all around big game hunting in the USA. Or for that matter, most hunting in Africa outside dangerous game. I have a bunch of other calibers but I would never be without a 30-06.
