I love hunting with cast boolits, as I suspect many of you do too. I know that when I was just getting started, the proper alloy, velocity, mold style, and so on, seemed more of an art form than an exact science.

How about a thread that is dedicated to successful, or maybe not so successful cast bullet performance... and of course, photos always make a thread all the better.

This was from yesterday:

Winchester 94, Canadian Centennial 26" rifle
30-30 rebored to 38-55

Load was Starline brass, CCI 200 primers, 21.0 grains IMR 4198 under a Lyman 375248 sized to .377". 245 grains with air-cooled wheelweight alloy. Lubed with Lyman Alox. Approximately 1,400 fps [1,418 average to be exact].

Shot was right around 40 yards. Buck bounded about 30 yards and fell over. Graveyard dead. Double lung hit. Judging from the entry and exit wound, either the boolit mildly expanded, or the flat nose did its work.

Good start. I've whacked a few critters with lead, will be back later with a pic or two and the stories.

No photos, but a setup much like yours. Marlin 336 30-30 bored out by JES to 38-55. Starline brass, 21 gr 4198, with a tuft of dacron for filler. Bullet is an Accurate 38-250B cast of softer 10 Bhn alloy, powder coated, air cooled, sized to .377 and I get closer to 1450 fps. This bullet has a larger meplat than the Lyman, really hits hard. Hit a doe at 20 yards, entrance was rear edge of near shoulder, exit was centered on the joint in the far shoulder. When he was helping skin the doe, my son was surprised at the damage, asked "what did you use on this thing, a cannon?" Way more damage than his buck had from a 15 yard shot with his 30-06 and 165 Partition. I just finished cutting up that shoulder for the freezer, there wasn't much left, for sure no eating up to the hole! I think next time I'd better go to a bit harder alloy like ww, or stay off the shoulder.

I tend to do things backwards now and then and my experience with CF lead began in such a way. My beginnings with lead bullets was fairly typical I'd guess. Purchased some and tried them out with a couple different guns with abysmal results. Moved on for several years and just about concurrent with my purchase of a 77/44 I read Paul Matthews' book "The Paper Jacket".

While the 77/44 shot OK with jacketed bullets I was determined to do better and began delving into the affair. Ordered some bullets from Montana Precision Swagging for which they did not have the swage dies, so I fiddled around for a spell and finally they arrived. 300 grain, two boxes, one a flat base and the other a cup base. Right out of the gate they shot well. Only problem was the cup base tended to fare poorly above 1200 fps whereas the flat base was clinking along at about 1600 fps. Seemed like a good load and I stuck with it.

Some time passed and after I retired I had occasion to go hunting in a local game management area and crossed paths with a pack of porkers. First shot hit high shoulder at about 20 yards on a young boar of about 125#. Boom-Flop, case closed. It shattered the shoulder blade, spine and many ribs before devastating the hip and offside ham bone. Came to rest under the skin.

More time passed and I wound up headed to Mississippi for a deer hunt. Went to the range to verify zero and I was pleasantly surprised to see that old ammo loaded 9 years prior still worked.

Arrived at the camp and set about chasing deer. On the evening of our second day it was raining and I figured WTH, the gun is S/S and has a waterproof red dot sight so I went to the woods. Herd of does emerged for my consideration and the largest was about 80 yards out. Lined up and let it rip. Boom-lunge-Flop. She weighed 165# before I put a knife to work. Broke the foreleg going in, 2 ribs, cut the heart in half, 3 ribs on the way out and the offside leg bone before stopping under the hide. Retained weight is ballpark 290 gr.

I've killed a couple of small pigs with the .30 Sneezer and over 150 with .22 RFs, mostly CB shorts. Don't have worthy pics of the Sneezer kills and I've posted the other pigs pics too many times. WTH....

I shot a small VA doe weeks ago using a H&R Handi rifle rechambered to 357 Maximum. The bullet is an Accurate 220gr LHP cast 20-1. I load it light with 9.0gr of Viht Tin Star for 1160fps. Two does walked toward me from across the field. One stopped below my stand and as I was moving my rifle around the stand I noticed the other one standing broadside at 20 yds looking away from me. At the shot she jumped straight up and ran 30yds. She dropped 15ft into the woods. The field dressing and skinning work revealed the bullet had expanded and penetrated all the way through the small deer. I ate right up to the hole. smile

Thanks, Dinny

Of course. It was the K-Hornet w/cast that gave Roy Weatherby a fit of jealousy.

These are from a few years back...

1970's vintage '94. Lyman tang. 30-30

Bullet was Lyman 31141 using air cooled wheelweight lead, beer can gas checks, and Lyman Alox @ .309"

IMR 3031, right around 29-30 grains for 1900 fps or so IIRC. Worked great!

I just posted this in the dead crittter thread above and then saw this. So, I'm pasting the other here as well and adding a coupla more pics....

Mine is unique to me in that it's the first deer I've taken with a powder coated cast bullet. I started casting and powder coating after last season and set up several rifles to use them in. They include 3 30 calibers, a 45-70, and this one, a 9X57. I had hunted a few days with my M54 Winchester in 30WCF and M1895 Marlin in 45-70, but no opportunities presented themselves. Then, last Wednesday a good 6 point crossed a power line easement at a rapid walk and I snapped a shot at him with the 9X57. I almost led him too much and also shot a little low, but the cast bullet did the job.
