Buddy of mines dad ran a bar on the county line with an illegal gambling room in the back. Liquor was free as long as you were settin in at a table. I reckon he done alright money wise. I know he took a schit load of "stuff" in Trade against out standing tabs. Boats, cars, motorcycles you name it. I know it cost him a lot of money to keep the law off his ass.

I knew a guy who made his living playing poker and betting on Jai alai. He made very good money at it. I knew him in college and he drove a new BMW and had plenty of cash. He was majoring in accounting. He said Jai alai was completely rigged and the only trick was understanding the betting and how the game would go depending on the betting. He couldn’t bet big at Jai alai without changing the rig but it was steady easy money. Poker is a game of skill and you need the right game.

Had a bunch of farmers, in my neighborhood, who would gather at a tiny, tiny community (five houses and a big grain elevator) to play poker. There was a little general store/gas station that had an old kitchen table in the corner where they played. The game never really ended. It was postponed for periods but it would always resume. The stakes were always pretty much pocket change and no one cared whether they won or lost. Then it changed. Not sure who decided to make the stakes higher, but they got pretty serious. Finally, one guy had to turn over the deed to an irrigated quarter to another player and another guy blamed the game for his divorce. The local sheriff locked the door and told them he'd start putting people in jail if he heard the game was up and going again.

I won't buy a pickle card or watch the power ball drawing, I gambled on farming, too long to think that I can win.

Remember about 20 years ago when everybody thought they were a poker player? Bunch of tv shows and schit.

It was pretty comical.

I've never been a gambler but do like like to play cards, and have won some money a few times.

I got hammered one night and entered a poker tournament. I ended up winning and everyone hated my guts because I had no idea WTF I was doing.

It was pretty damn funny.

Backroom and garage poker and craps with acquaintances and "friends of friends" can sometimes be a fast road to broke, too.

Not uncommon for two to play as partners unknown to other players.

Then there's marked cards, and assorted crooked crap shooting devices.

Still got dad's little catalogue of nothing but crooked gambling products -- everything from pre-marked decks of cards in all major brands and devices and dyes to mark 'clean' decks while in play, loaded and shaved dice and electromagnets, punch boards with the winner keys, ...you name it... The seller played it off as a catalogue of "Magic Tricks".

I watched dad clean them out time after time and take their whole paycheck then they thanked him for loaning them $20 till next payday.

I do , like many here do numbers for a living, most "gambling" is not even close to fair, its a game of chance . If you have the ability Black Jack is your game !

He worked third shift and several times came into work straight from the casino with thousands of dollars cash on him. The 3rd shift supervisor found out he had brought $18k cash in winnings with him to work one night and jumped his ass royally for it. Supervisor told him he better NEVER bring anywhere near that much cash money in to work again as he was responsible for his as well as other employee's safety and he was making himself a big target to be knocked in the head and maybe even killed with that much money on him.

I had a buddy that paid his bills for 5 years playing Hold 'Em. We were in our 20's. He had a rule that you never bet too big with someone who doesnt know how to play. Because well its a game of chance at the end. Someone who doesn't know what they are doing will play hands they shouldn't and take long chances. People who know what to do will fold on because the chances of getting the card they need is so low. He went big one night trying to win a huge pot playing against a woman he said barely knew how to play...............................and lost his entire knot. She got the million to 1 card she needed to win the pot on the flop. He had like $100 when he walked out of the casino wiped out after doing very well for years.

Used to be a bar near Winterhaven, California had a sign on the building, liquor in the front - poker in the rear. Might still be there.
