You may have seen my previous posts about my load development for my 7RM. After significant testing of Barnes bullets (140 and 150 TTSX, and 145 LRX) and powders (RL19, RL22, IRM7828, H4831SC) I was able to settle on 66.5 grains of 22 pushing the new(er) 145LRX on my 7RM. It was running at 3,100 FPS out of my 700 with a 24" tube and consistently shooting under MOA. I recently went on a 10 day hunt with Stone Mountain Safaris out of Toad River BC (Mile 422 on the ALCAN) and shot a nice 6x6 elk. I'll do a full trip report elsewhere, but I thought I'd do a tidbit on the bullets performance. When we got to the lodge we checked our rifles and made sure we were still dialed in. After the 100 yard group test I launched one out to a small 1/2" steel plate at 285 yards. The Leupold BDC dial held true, and the bullet left a mark...a good mark. I hit the plate with my Dad's 300wby (shooting 180gr TSX at 3,200fps) as well (high left shot was his) Backside, that 300 WBY really hits Not sure if there was anything left of my bullet and it just fell out of the steel. If you look at the WBY shot, there is still a good deal of the base and boattail left, though it is a much longer bullet). Long story short (I'll leave the suspense for the full trip report), we got on a bull that bugled mid-day when his lady friend got up for a snack. As we stalked in closer and he ran around a hillside after her we closed the distance to an even 300 yards. The result....one dead elk. As I looked closer at his far side shoulder I noticed this I knew exactly what it was Two shots, both stopped by his skin on the far side, fantastic mushroom and even better performance. When I was working up my loads Dad said "Those 145s are pretty light", he commented 3 or 4 times between the kill and the trip home how impressed he was with their performance at 300 yards. Anyway, I thought I'd share, I guess all that work this summer and contemplation really paid off.
Wanted: Vintage Remington or Winchester hats, patches, shirts. PM me if you have something.

Very nice bull, rifle and shooting. At the moment I have some 140 TTSXs that I'm going to shoot out of a 7mm WBY.

Cleaned up the bullets over the weekend and tossed them in the scale they measured 144.2 and 144.6 grains or 99.4% and 99.7% weight retention, respectively.

Little off the subject. Do you know how Toad Crossing got it's name? This is the stream out behind the store.

I have no idea, seems like it was pretty loaded with Beavers from the naked eye moving along at 50mph.

Congrats...a 145 may be light in a 7mag...in a c/c...my first deer was shot about 30 yds w/a 145 speer, and the bullet vaporized on an 8pt WT deer's shoulder....but he dropped w/in a very short distance.
I won't use a bullet on big game that might blow up, unless it's very specialized bullet ie. a 105 amax that will only shoot lungs or head/necks.
Barnes as most know, is a WHOLE other animal and is not apples to apples w/weight.
Residual wt., frontal diameter, overall penetration/wound channel is what's key, but I do consider BC when deciding WHICH Barnes as too light can be detrimental on residual impact speed on longer shots - and min fps is key on copper bullets IMO.

Glad to see the good performance. I've got a couple hundred moly'ed up that I plan on using in a 284Win ULA I've got on the way...

you should see what the 127 LRX does to steel plates at 300. I took my 6x6 with my 6.5-300. The bullet works!

Nice shot. Have been using the Barnes since 1994 in a 6.5 ( 120X ) so your success doesn't surprise me. Each year I think how can those little bullets work. They don;t just work , they excel. The all copper mono's have proven to me to be top notch elk bullets. Have also taken elk with my 7 mag & the140grTSX. Total penetration, even thru heavy bone.

I'm liking this thread. I just took delivery of 2 boxes of 145 LRX for my 280 AI. I'm fairly certain they can cook at 3000 and my current 280 has liked other Barnes bullets. I really, really like 2 holes in ALL animals.

I’ve never shot the rifle at 100 yards but it did real well at 250 yards in the old pump gun. No animals yet but I don’t suspect problems either with it.

Thanks for the right up and congrats on a beautiful animal. The 145 LRX is my bullet of choice in my 280 AI, I pretty much load Barnes for all our rifles some TTSX' but most I've switched over to the LRX's not that I haven't been happy with the TTSX's, the LRX's seem to just be even "more better".
