OP Teal Campfire 'Bwana Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 38,858 Flyover Country	Preface - my #1 rifle is a Kimber Montucky, 7-08 and it does everything I could possibly want for my hunting right now. Syn, light and very accurate. I have a line on a Ruger MKII in 7 SAUM. ANIB. Wood stocked and legitimately appears to be unfired at a good price. Were it stainless, I'd have bought it already. I reload so - my question is, why do I need the SAUM? Trying to be talked into this from you guys I guess.... On a cartridge v cartridge perspective - what's it giving me over the 7-08? Me

One finally popped up in a rifle I liked and I went for it. I'm just starting to work on it, but I view it as a 7-08 that kicks heavier bullets at about the same velocity as the standard does with 140's. Needed? No, but no matter how many hints a guy gets, sometimes he just has to go and do it himself. Last edited by Teeder; 01/01/21.

Seven/700 BDL bottom "metal" is Dog Schit,for certain. I'd go AICS DBM and binderless there,for both improved feed/function and the COAL increase. Hint. The .661 BC Skinner 180 REALLY pales to the 180 Hornie ELD's .796. Hint. I hear good thangs about the 190 Beer Cans. Hint. Ruger COAL and ring spacing sucks. Seven COAL wayyyyyyyyy sucks worse. The Montucky 7 Whizzum connects all dots and easily. Hint. IIRC, Ruger didnt make many of the short mags which is also why I bothered to pick it up outta the rack. It's like 550 clams too - likely due to chambering. I'll likely pass on it but I still do like the idea of a quick 7. That fat bastard 7RM you're cooking, stuck in my head tho not at that weight. Me

If you have the RPM,throat geometry and COAL,they certainly rate a thunk. Hint................... DBoston Campfire Regular D Joined: Nov 2020 Posts: 584	The 7 SAUM is a good cartridge but to me it belongs in a lighter and maybe shorter rifle. I would buy the Ruger because of the price and maybe even sell it with out shooting it, you could easily get your money back and more if you got any collectors bidding on it. The 280 AI is a favorite especially if you are not going for a fly weight rifle. The 280 AI generates enough recoil that I wouldn't want anything lighter than the NULA chambered for it.
