It was a total impulse buy, but I really like it. It's a Remington model Six pump-action chambered in 30-06. This was the most common chambering for the model Six.The wood is an upgrade from the 760 with nice checkering and decent grain. It also has a cheek piece which is a nice touch. The cartridge case head on the bottom of the reciever is what caught my eye from the counter, hadn't seen that before. I'm going to scope it, but I'm not sure if I should go with an period-correct gloss finsh or a more modern piece of glass. I have a NIB Leupold VX2 3-9x40 matte finish that would sit on top quite nicely.This will not be a primary, or even a back-up rifle, but it needs and deserves to be shot, handled and enjoyed. I plan to do exactly that.

The Model Six was manufactured from 1981-1987. The 7600 of course was continued.
The Model Six cost $20.00 more at the time. Go Figure !!

Hey jwall, how hard are those stocks to come by? I have a line on a beautiful 760 with a synthetic stock. I’d like to put a M6 stock on it for the raised cheek piece.

Hunting buddy has a .270 Model Six. Funny thing, he's a cool shot, and I've never, ever seen him pump it fast. One shot and he's done.

jwall, you nailed it! That's a fine collection of Six's you have there. Mine does not have a sling swivel stud on the buttstock like yours do.

To the best of my ?memory? the Model Six rifles did NOT come with sling
studs. I believe that I installed those myself.

I have FMD > Fading Memory Disorder.... so figure that in. Lol

Saw this 30-06 760 for $359 today. Six digit serial number starting in 301xxx so must be late 50s to early 60s.

Mr jwall has some nice Rem 6 pumps...I love Rem pumps, too. Here's a couple of favorites, both wearing Lyman 4X scopes.

I'm a fan and consider the Model Six Remingtons finest effort.

I have a 760 with sn 2141xx that was assembled in 06/54.

After some brief research, I've concluded that your FMD is in very early stages at the most! There is no indication from Remington that the model Six had sling studs installed at the factory, at least that I could find.

Very nice.. I had decided to buy a pump Remington for hunting in Pa. and WVa.. Then the camp was sold and that phase of life is over...

I think you'll love it. I have a 7600 in .270 with the mate bead-blasted finish; I took that to its logical conclusion and fitted a Magpul shotgun stock and Leupold 1.5-4x. It's now my general-purpose rifle for when 5.56 is insufficient.

Any pictures of that setup? General magpul 870 stock?

Here you go! The Magpul stock (870 SGA) requires removal of some of the lug material to fit the receiver as it is designed for a 12-gauge shotgun while the 7600 receiver is the same size as a 20-gauge 870. Likewise, the polymer sits proud of the receiver - I wrapped the back of the receiver in masking tape to protect it, and carefully shaped the stock down with a file and then fine sandpaper. It's still not a perfect fit and I may revisit it in the future, but it's miles better than when I first attached the stock.

I'm partial to the SGA stock because of the grip angle and LOP/cheek riser adjustability. My preference is for shorter-than-average LOP for offhand shooting and/or shooting while wearing a small pack.

The magazine is a Triple K ten-rounder. I've found that these can require minor tweaks to the feed lips, as they sometimes present the cartridge nose too low for proper feeding. After that, they're pretty reliable. I have three ten-rounders and one of the excellent one-piece factory magazines - the four-round magazine carries better and is my preference for hunting and field carry, but sometimes a bit more capacity is valuable.

I'll add that my 7600 is more accurate than my AR.

yep killed the biggest deer i ever got this year ,a thick antlered 9 point ,with a big body ,I almost could not drag him out of the woods he was so heavy , got 1/3 more meat out of him than most bucks i kill , .Got him with a Rem Mod -6 30-06, Dad bought it new in 1984 , I got it off of him in 1988 .Hunted with it a few years .Then got a bolt 700 ,so it sat in the safe a long time ,till i decided to use it this Deer season .My 80 year old dad was pleased ,his exact words was ,glad to see that old rifle is still doing its job

What about the accuarcy compared to a similar rifle like a Winchester M70 or Remington 700. I have a Rem 700 in 7mmRM. And I like it a lot. Mounted is a Zeiss 2.5-10/50 from the 1980s.

between my Mod-6 and Mod-700 .At one hundred yards they are the same 1" groups if i do my part ,at 200 they are real close ,BUT on the Mod -6 i have a Luepold ?X6X36 heavy duplex , thick reticle set up for brush shooting .Mod 700 scope has a 2.5X10X40 duplex reticle that is thin in the middle so easier to get close groups.So it is more the scope and me than the rifle

one of my favorite guns is my '65 760 carbine in 30/06. 2-7x32 bushnell 3200 on talley lows. it shoots factory CL 165 MOA or less. i put on an old school leather strap sling and can carry it all day rain or shine because its nicely weathered and easy to clean.

My son has a beautiful 7600 in .35 Whelen. It is scoped and is a tack driver. However, that is the hardest shooting rifle that I have ever tried to stay behind. The shotgun stock geometry is probably the reason. To me it has way more felt recoil than my M-700 .35 Whelen with the same loads and more than my .300 Weatherby. Kills on both ends. I won’t shoot it again! Happy Trails

you got that right ,.dad put them on his in 1984 , when i got it off of him in 1988 .I took them off and put regular scope mount on it .just about everyone in his generation ,in W.Va ,used them see thru's ,i did not like them .The only thing i found good about them was it made it easier to wrap your hand around the receiver while carrying it

I had a 760 in .30-06 w metal buttplate.
W 150 gr factory ammo it was not bad at all.
Even when wearing just a T shirt.

Was expecting something fierce from all I read.
Bud has one and says it kicks.

My 760 06 Myrtle wood stock very accurate and killed a lot of game with it.

I took the Six out for a sight-in session this morning. I didn't go with the see-thru type mounts since I can't really get down on the stock low enough use the open sight effectively. They also place my head too high for the scope, so I went with Weaver style rings and mounts. After a few shots at 25 yards to get me close, I moved to 100yds to see how it zeroed and grouped, if at all. I brought Hornady 150gr Interlock and Hornady 180gr SST. Factory ammo is tough right now, and I'm not going to load for a rifle that I may never see a hunt. The first group was low about 2" and was in the 1.5" size for 3 shots. I didn't measure it. Adjustments were made and the rifle zeroed, I tried to concentrate on a 3-shot string to verify the 100 yard zero. Those 3 shots measured 7/8". Needless to say I didn't try the 180's. With a scope that has a max power of 5x, I consider this to be exceptional. I'm no bench shooter but am certainly skilled enough to verify point of impact with 3-5 shots. If the ammo supply was normal, I would have run a box or two through it. I'm trying to talk myself into carrying this for fall bear season. Shots in the tall timber and hucklberry patches are usualy quite close, and I can see the Model Six fitting that niche with no issues.

I’m glad it shoots well, one of my son in laws has a dozen or more of these. He hunts in Arkansas, claims they are very popular there.

My first deer hunt was a couple of years ago - I took my father-in-law's 760 in 30-06 with an old 4x weaver scope. I do not know how accurate the rifle is because I wasn't very accurate with it - it's probably a good thing that I didn't ever end up with a deer in my sights on that trip. Now that I've spent some more time shooting and sort of know what I'm doing, I'd love to spend some time shooting that rifle and see what it's capable of.
