Back around 1965 my Dad bought an old pump rifle from my uncle for $25. It was my first deer rifle. From my research it looks like a model 141 from the forend. Here is where it gets confusing. It is a 25 remington with a C 60000 serial number, has no Gamemaster mark, and has 22 inch barrel. All this would indicate a model 14.

Is there a difinitive way to differentiate the model 14 and 141? Tried to join Remington society.org but it didn't like my email address.

The first shot with this rifle gave me a bloody nose.

Any help would be much appreciated.

14's have a semi pistol grip stock whereas 141's have a full pistol grip

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the wood on these two models was interchangeable? I'm wondering if I have a model 14 with model 141 wood.

Been looking at the images of the pistol grip of the two models. I'm not seeing much of a difference to my eye. Can you explain what to look for?

Thanks

It would be easy to swap wood.

Your description sound like a Remington 14 with a 141 forearm.

The 25 Remington is a pretty mild cartridge, so how did you get a bloody nose?

The 141 saysr "model 141" right on the receiver. If it doesn't have it it's a 14. And the 25 Remington has never given anyone a bloody nose.

Good question. I was really small for my age at 14. The old man had a model 12 Remington .22 pump that looked a lot like the model 141 so I thought it would be just like shooting a 22. Leaned over the the truck hood and didn't hold tight at all. The result was bloody. First center fire I ever shot.

One thing about Remington pumps (have a bunch and really like them) is the grip design puts your thumb very close to your nose - so a loose hold would do it. Also the 14s have slimmer forends than the 141s. The early Remington pumps are some of my favorite rifles have 12s, 14s, 14 1/2s, 25s and 760/7600s in rifle and 31s in shotguns.

A C60000 S/N would date your gun to 1917-1918.

There were a number of guns (in the mid-1935 to March 1936 time frame) in the S/N range of 1 to approx 4,000 that have the new M141 wood but were not stamped Gamemaster on the receiver.

Read a lot of posts on another forum by an individual who does a lot of work on M14’s and M141’s, nothing swaps out easily on these guns.

Many years ago I handled a Remington 14 or a 141 in 25 REM that was for sale locally. It wasnt pretty, but I wish I would have bought it. Only 25 REM I have ever encountered.

Hi & below a Rem Model 141 - from 1936, first year of production & Model 14, from near last year.
Correct that there was also a 'transitional model' (collector term only). I can provide a photo of mine if desired. But essentially beyond nomenclature, it combines 141 features excepting a Model 14 barrel, such 22" versus 24" for the 141. The Model 141 had a later conventional style forged integral (until postwar) ramp front and leaf barrel sight. My Model 14 in pix below also with a Lyman Tang sight secured to factory mounting holes. The 14 had a unique forged front sight shown and a unique style barrel rear sight which if replaced with 'other' dovetail tang sight, left an ugly milled out barrel slot.
A pity the 5 pix limit. I can provide more if desired!
Most of these I've collected as in the instant pix, in .35 Remington. The only of the four Remington chamberings, .25, .30, .32, .35, yet surviving to modernity. The .25 Rem, paralleling the 25-35 Winchester, is indeed a nice round. I have a single nice Mod 14 in such. These Models were also built in carbine form with 18" barrels, straight grip stock & of course integral front sight bases as described above. The 141 genre carbines, few prewar, are almost non-existent. The 14 carbines are uncommon but 'out there'. My sole specimen is in my preferred .35 Rem and from late Great War years.
Scant few pix below.
Best, happy New Year & Stay Safe!
John

Always had a thing for the Carbines.
Pics of a few of mine are posted in the Deer Hunting Forum, on p. 86 of Pump Rifles and Deer Thread.

Thanks for all the help on this rifle.

I haven't shot it in about 50 years but have about 30 original casings. A couple of questions. About thirty years ago I bought a Lee Loader set in 25 Rem. Would this a reasonable setup to load up some 117 gr bullets? The rifle also looks like it had a peep sight on it at one time. The tapped holes on the receiver have plugs that are not slotted and the stock has a hole in it about where a peep would have been. What is the model on the Lyman peep that would work?

Thanks to all

If there’s a screw hole in the stock at the tang it’s a Marbles R8 tang sight you’re looking for.
