On the other hand I'm watching a decent 300 99EG with a Stith mount on an auction sight languish for what's probably a reasonable price right now!

That does it. Evey darned thing I own is now officially for sale!

Seriously though. I have a 99G I'm gonna sell and if anybody here is interested before I float it on the classifieds, PM me. .30-30, 20" barrel. No extra holes, good headspace and tight, very nice bore- all in all a good shooter. It is however a nice evenly patina'ed grey rat, no rust. Someone in the past applied an extra coat of varnish. I threatened to strip the wood and refinish but could never quite bring myself to do it. $750 would make me box it up and ship it to you. If it were absolutely pristine it would be a $1200 gun, at least.

Also have a 99 project I'd sell cheap. Mostly complete action with a .300 barrel hanging on it. Barrel has a nice bore but it was made from a WWII Springfield barrel. Small dent in LH side of receiver, doesn't effect functioning. I figured on filling the dent with TIG when finishing the gun, but again one of those things I never got around to. $150 from my door to yours.

The Internet is, frankly, by contemporary standards "the 'other' market". The 'real world' of earlier days, a spectrum of course. But the Internet if included in "ordinary gun shop/gun show sales, often a considerable distortion resulting. There are actually two markets. The Internet actually remains relatively small considering the traditional sources. But in "profile", is gigantic. The "armchair gunshow", a term as coined by the prominent S&W Standard Catalog author. Perhaps a haven for guys with too much disposable income and too little free time. The analogy I've used before, if you're hauling in $1K per hour billable time, far cheaper just to 'buy big' & let chips fall; that compared to investing hours as the billable meter paused! There are the big Internet seller firms also, blowing their hype re overpriced products. Use of superlatives to gloss over ho-hum goods. The 'net' affecting all of us, is viewing the relatively small number, but highly publicizes, Internet sales and construing such as true "retail value". Not the absolutely wild sales, but Internet mainstream, "real price" as net to seller, a better measure. Such as the classic definition of value: What a willing seller and willing buyer agree for such product. Here the "Gorilla in the midst", distorting!

Our solutions are two. One, buy & sell direct thru good Forums such as this one, advertising & commission free. The other, to propose... As epitaph here, perhaps what we all need is an Amazon of the Internet gun brokerage market! Small profit margin amplified by volume!

I've known where one is for $600 for a while now, and a 30's 99RS in 300 for $1000. And these 99C's and 1950's 99R's going for $2k+ just makes me shake my head.

But not really my business. If buyer and seller are both happy, more power to them.

It didn't sell. The Stith was sporting a Lyman Alaskan. I have three EGs, otherwise I would have been tempted.

Auctions do make people do crazy things. They get to competing and lose all sense of value. I just sold a mint 94 made in 1959 for $875 and thought I had hit a home run. Someone will not be happy when he sobers up on that one.

I have been scratching my head on the winchester 94 auction price ever since i saw it.... I just can't figure out what the bidders are seeing or thinking. I have one that is just as nice as that one that i really don't want to sell but for that kind of money it would be gone!

Not surprising at all. Winchester collectors are fanatics. A good friend has one of the best collections of Winchesters in the country. He prefers 95s, but has a lot of model 70s and 94s as well. He has paid double the current bid on that gun for some of his. Condition is everything, and that one being pre-64 and mint, will bring top dollar.

There is something funny about this auction.That is a standard pre 64 model 94 in mint condtion.It is worth $1000 tops.I recently sold one that was unfired but no box for $1000.I know where there is a new in the box pre 64 94 that can be bought for $2000.This has to be some kind of gag or scam.

Right. I could understand were it something odd or rare several folks needed to round out a collection. The 94 Winchester from the 50's is one of the most common firearms ever produced. My father and I have one apiece that look exactly like the one in the auction. I expect most gun guys do also.

Difference is no one is bidding on this one.

I like the word "patina". LOL! It sounds classier than rust.

That rifle's opening bid is about 10 times what it's worth. Other than some internals, I'm not sure how much of the rifle could even be used for parts, given the exterior condition, without substantial work. The one odd thing is that the bore looks clean. Generally an exterior with that level of abuse means the bore is toast, too.

Yeah, people are being fu cking stupid right now. Check scope prices and availability on ebay. Things getting ridiculous, not just on primers and powder and guns anymore. Its scopes, gun parts and toilet paper..
