From the early 20's through the middle 30's there was an option that could be ordered that was "Silver Plate with name and scroll on stock". Ranging from $9 in 1922 and dropping to $5 in 1935, which is the last I that I think the Extras were listed. Not listed after 1935... but does that mean they weren't available?

Has anybody ever seen a rifle with one?

Jaaack has this 1939-1940 99R (personally I think it's a 99RS that somebody swapped the tang sight on) with a plate. Obviously this kind of thing can be done outside of the factory.. which is why we're curious if anybody has any others?

Whether factory or not, beautiful rifle and cool bit of history!

Rory I'm surprised to hear you say it's cool even if it's not factory. That's like an added compass or something. LOL

No, usually provenance related stuff is just plain cool if well done. And that's well done, and may very well be factory.

Heck, I bought the RJ 99R... (obviously NOT factory)

I have two 99Ks that have gold presentation plates inletted into the right side of the stock. One belonged to Brigadier General Herbert T. Johnson, who was the adjutant general of the VT NG in the 1930's, and the other belonged to Frank C. Beckwith, who was the president of Hamilton Watches in the 1930's.

I've seen several early 1899's with the gold shield, a couple without a name engraved. That always struck me as odd... Though one of the named grades came with the plaque by default.

Jeff, interesting that you've found two with gold plates on the stock. Are the plates identical? Doesn't seem to match the "Silver plate" option for $5, but I'm sure Savage would have done that for some extra $$. Be interesting to see if there's any Fox presentation shotguns with plates similar to yours.

A friend has an old 99 303 with a gold shield and "Silvers" pad.
Both noted on the factory letter.
Very cool!

Fug has a couple with silver plaques from the 20's. Putting them all up here for reference for later on:
