My son has our Browning A5 20 gauge (Remington built in the 40's) and it may need some work. He says recoil spring but I don't know what the symptom or problem might be. I am hoping for someone to assess what the issue might be and a course of action. Any recommendations I can pass along to him? Thanks, L M PS also posted in the Gunsmithing section

There's a gunsmith on Old Seward beside the Wiggy's store, Alaska Custom Firearms.
He did a few things for me while I waited. Number is 349-4867.

Those old Browning’s required the rings above and below the recoil spring be in a certain location depending on whether you were shooting light target loads or heavy magnum hunting loads. Not sure if that’s the problem, but the gun won’t cycle if the rings are not in the correct location. I am sure a google search would give you a diagram.
Also, don’t overtighten the forend cap or the forend will split.

Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

Steve- Alaska Custom Firearms...
I think he is a nice guy, we hit it off immediately, talking guns, and I really like him personally...
I gave him a 1911 frame, slide, and guts to fit, and notch for sights, then Nitride. MANY months later (I think it was well over a year, but it's been awhile and I don't remember), He calls me and says he's almost ready to send it off for Nitriding. Several months later I get it back. It functions just fine, but there's a huge (like .025-.040) gap from the base of the sights to the top of the slide. Now that it's nitrided, it's kinda too late to fix (and I didn't want to wait another year).
Nice guy, the kind I'd have a beer with, but I'll never give him one of my firearms again.

A friend asked him to fit a curved buttplate to an old Mauser he was building. The best thing my friend could say was, "well, he's no carpenter" I'll second what loadclear said, nice guy, but I'm got giving him anything to work on. Andy Hawke did a nice job installing and fitting a new butt pad for me. Other than that, I haven't had any work done.
