Is a model 70 action for a WSSM different from a regular Model 70 short action other than the bolt face? Any wildcats that you could build on one?

Yes, the WSSM action is shorter than a standard short action.



Here is a 308Win and two 358 WSSM for length reference.

You’re pretty much stuck using the WSSM case in those actions unless you can get a bolt face changed to a standard size. The magazine box is only about 2.4” so choices would be limited.

If I ever tire of my 358 it’ll get changed to a 30 WSSM or 30 OSSM.
