The 6.8 Western is a decent cartridge but doesn't offer much of anything to someone with a 6.5PRC, 270 Win, .280 Rem, 280AI or 7mm RM.

Seems like if you screwed an 8.5 twist barrel appropriately throated on your 270 you would have the same thing. But then again I was never a short stroker.

I fail to see why you would jump on this chamber. It will have limited rifle manufacturing well behind the popularity and manufacturing of the 6.5 PRC. In addition it offers nothing in the hunting field over the 270 WSM. Granted it is twisted to apply heavy for caliber upper BC .277 projectiles, but honestly the WSM is a bit faster with 160 grain bullets, which work fine in a 10 twist. Finally the .277 made its bones with 130, 140 and 150 grain weight class bullets in a 10 twist on game from all walks of life under a multitude of hunting conditions, terrains and elevations. So if a 270 WCF, 270 WSM or 270 Wby give you magnum velocities with bullets from 130-160 grains, where exactly does the Western fit in for the .277 enthusiasts other than hurling 170 grain class bullets at game?

Hunters and shooters are constantly buying different calibers that are similar or slightly different but preform about the same. My guess is plenty of them will buy this one as well. How many of us have four to ten rifles with calibers that do about the same thing but maybe in different rifle weights and configurations. Not interested myself but it will be interesting to watch to see what rifles they offer it in.

I’m all for it, and anything else that they can make and sell a bunch of. Won’t be getting one myself as I have two regular .270s, which are both more rifle than needed most of the time, plus a bunch of other rifles. Looks like they did a pretty good job on this one. Oughta also make it easier on those who’ve been trying to push the envelope on the other 6.8s without any bullets to speak of.

Once again, a good round that doesn’t do anything a handful of other cartridges don’t do. An answer to a question that nobody asked.

Thank goodness for the Metric system, without it they'd have to call it the 270WSM 2.0.

The 6.8W case length looks to be 0.10" shorter than the 270WSM, but the OAL looks to be the same.

Pretty weird. I guess it might get you into long bullets w/o having to go to a mid length action. We should be expecting a 6.5Western, 30Western, 6Western, 7Western...

These probably won't feed out of a binderless AICS mag, but who knows.

With a name like "Western" they'll have to offer it in a lever gun— enter the Browning BLR chambered in 6.8 Western with a 2 round detachable magazine.

I'm not getting it.

It's just another short-action .270 laugh

The stack on the local shelf has just been sitting there for close to 3 weeks now...

Right next to the RUM's, WSM's, Weatherby's, etc.

ShootingTimes had a very good article on the 6.8 Western a month or so ago. JVB did a very good job explaining the rationale behind it.

It is supposed to be a better 6.5 PRC with less recoil than a 7mmRM or a 300WM. Not really needed, but OK in it's own right. If I was starting over, I'd strongly consider it.

Wonder if they’ll chamber it in this year’s 1885s?

Like most of the new popular calibers, it’s entirely capable, but doesn’t do anything a half dozen other calibers do.
