I have a question for those that have built a custom 257 Roberts. I am starting to put some pieces together for a custom rifle build and I’m at the point of choosing a barrel and I’m stuck on the rate of twist. I would like to, if it’s possible, shoot everything from reduced load 60-75 grain flat points to 120 grain full power partitions, would you go with a
1-10”or 1-9” twist? Is it possible to get decent hunting accuracy out of that many bullet weights?
Thanks

I’ve owned six Rob’s with 1-10” and think 1-9” is perfect. That’s what I’d do from the ground up. But more important, if you’re building on a SA make sure the throat works with a spitzer and a 2.8” magazine. Talk to your builder and make sure not to use a standard SAAMI throat.

+1 for the 1-9". I've had a couple with 1-10" also and couldn't do much with anything heavier than 100gr, with the exception of the short, fat 117s. It's puzzling why manufacturers still favor the 1-10" for that bore.

My experience is very similar to Brad’s.

My “custom to end all customs” was just boxed up and headed for Dennis Olson to be custom stocked.

After a few customs and a Kimber all twisted 10” I went w/ a Rock Creek cut rifled tube twisted 1-in-9” intending to run >/=115s has including the hunting VLDs.

Good luck great project!

Thanks for the input guys, I am thinking about going with a cut rifled barrel this time, was thinking about a Brux
I have 2 options on the action,1 a Rem 700 mountain rifle long action already done by Mark Bansner
2, a 5 digit model 70 classic stainless short action, I am leaning towards the 700 only because it was a gift from mom and dad

If you’re going 9” for longer bullets I think you’re right to do the long.

Hope ya come back when it’s ready and post up picks blueprint and range report maybe even game pics!

I have a Roberts with a 12 twist and it shoots sub moa with Speer 120's. I would not have used a 12 twist but the price was right. That said, if I was buying a new barrel, I would buy a 9 if it was available. More twist never hurts. GD

I will definitely post pics when it’s done, I hope to post all kinds of game pics. I am going through a downsizing phase right now, not that I had a huge collection but I’ve been getting rid of guns I don’t use. I’ve wanted to try a Roberts for a while, I hope to make this my all purpose Pennsylvania rifle, deer, coyotes, groundhogs, maybe even a head shot fall turkey

I've owned 5, maybe 6, rifles in .257 Roberts. One was a turd, wouldn't shoot anything well, so we can discount it entirely. I've also owned 4 .25-'06s (2 of those were turds that wouldn't shoot anything well). I've owned 1 .257 Weatherby .. a turd. But among those .25 / .25-'06s that were accurate with anything, all shot the big commercial makers' 120s fine. All had 1-10" twists. I see no reason to go with a 1-9" twist unless you're going with boutique bullets that are longer / heavier than what is available from major bullet makers. On the other hand, I don't see anything wrong with it. Those rifles, other than one Roberts with a long throat, did well with the 60-75 grain bullets. Oddly enough, for the most part i had more trouble getting accuracy with 100s than I did with either very heavy or very light including in rifles that shot the extremes very well.

Different makers seem to have diameters they do better than others. IMHO, though some others might make a better barrel in some other diameter, I believe Lilja makes the best .25 caliber barrels of all. I have a take-off 1-10" 3 L&G Lilja in a Remington magnum sporter contour that was shooting 5 shot groups in the 0.2s regularly with 100 grain ballistic tips when I took it off the action to build a 6mm Rem AI. It was the most consistently accurate rifle I ever owned.

With that personal experience behind me, I would not even consider anything but another Lilja 1-10" 3 land and groove barrel if I were building a .257. I just .. wouldn't.

Start at the start, use a long action, same for 6 Rem and AI versions. Some bullets are worth building a rifle around, and three come to mind, the 117g Sierra btsp(and flat base) and the 120g speer btsp, 10 twist is fine for both...pass the R#17!.

If you lean toward the 110g Accubond or the 115g Berger hunting, then the 9 Twist is absolutely the best.

No flies on the 257 AI!

If you are hell bent on using a Remington Short action, have the gunsmith install a Wyatt's mag box which will give you another .120 of Cartridge over all length.

I'd play with the Berger Bullets Twist Rate Stability Calc; on line. It can really educate you on what is best for your shooting conditions. I live, shoot and hunt at 4800 ft elevation and higher. The bullet stability and BC will change as you go higher/lower in elev. I've got two Bobs, both 1:10 and even then I wish I had a 1:9" twist, especially with the new, longer bullets out, coming out or about to come out (hint!!!). Should hopefully be able to talk about it in a week or two.

i own a few 257 Roberts too last year i rebarreled a Remington 30 express action / rifle with a 257 Roberts 25 inch 7 1/2 twist Brux barrel contour 3 1/2, rifle shoots like a bench rifle now loves Berger , Hornady and Nosler bullets 100 gr. and higher . the bullet i loaded for hunting was Berger 115 gr. VLD hunting bullet shoots 1/2-3/4 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards. good luck with your build,Pete53

There is no down side to a 9 twist

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

My custom Bob has a 10 twist barrel and the only 2 handloads I use are 75 gr. VMax and 110 gr. NAB. The 110 gr. NABs are the antelope getters, then I switch to the 75's to wack pdogs while I'm there.

Depending on your goals with this rifle, there are new bullets out now that require a 7.5 twist...
