I know a lot of guys like the G34, especially for comps like 3-gun. That being said, with the advent of the MOS and much improved electronic sights available now, is there enough benefit of the larger G34 over a G19 to justify the extra size/length?

Ah yes. There’s more weight up front, less muzzle flip and larger magazine. Seldom have I heard sight radius being the reason the g34 is used for action shooting sports. The alpha zone doesn’t require bullseye accuracy. The g34 is fast, that’s the reason most people pick it. There’s a lot of good shooters these days and it doesn’t take much skill to see the difference between a 19 and 34. The difference between a 17 and 34 might be less noticeable and possibly preferable for run and guns where weight matters. I’m contemplating switching to a 17 with red dot from an iron sighted 34 for that reason.

I think you misunderstood him because he didn't write very clearly. I believe what he was asking, was that since the MOS is an option on the 17&19, whether the longer sight radius of the G34 still relevant because you could aim just (or more) precisely with a smaller, faster handling gun.

I picked up a G34 awhile ago (first MOS) and salted it away in the safe to try out down the road and have since picked up a G19 MOS that I mounted an optic on and started using right away. I like the G19 quite a bit and didn't know if there was any real reason for the G34 now outside of the longer site radius which will be a moot point for me as I'd be using a electronic optic on whichever one I shoot. I've never shot in competition and have no experience with the speed factor of the G34 but the point about less muzzle-flip makes sense and would definitely be the kind of benefit that would make me want to hang on to the G34 as well. I also picked up my first shot-timer and have made several target stands to use with the large USPSA-type targets in hopes of honing my skills once it warms up. Hopefully I'll be able to improve my shooting skills where I can tell the difference between the two!
