I have thought about taking lessons or just winging it and learning online for decades but the thought of two hands and two feet moving at the same time was intimidating.

Looking at the cost of a basic 5-piece set for less than 3 bills used, it seems worth a try.

Is there any reason to spend over 3 bills for Pearl, Yamaha Tama or similar?

Any tips or advice?

This venture is for no other reason than personal fun and satisfaction.

My boy plays the crap out of them. I built a lot of things in my shop while he was learning. He plays the base too.

I played in a rock band when I was a teenager. I had a full set of Ludwig’s with Zildjian cymbals and high-hat. Our band was called ‘Leviathan’. We weren’t successful.

Nope, no reason to spend more than that. I have about 1K invested in my Tama set and just like you I figured I could just learn on my own. But since I have carpel tunnel in both hands I have found that I cannot hold the sticks properly or for very long so it just sits in my gun room. Drum sets are like Archery equipment, you never get anywhere your money back when you sell them. My set would be for sale if I could get most of my money back on it though.

I play. Have for over 40 years. I'd spend the money on cymbals, the drums can be made to sound how you want with tuning skills and good heads, crappy cymbals, however, will always sound like crap.

Craigslist used > cheap new. A good bass pedal makes a difference.

Yup. Cheap drums, new heads all around good hardware.
A few good cymbals.

Don’t have to break the bank to have fun.

My son likes my old Roland e-drums with low volume cymbals better than the "real" drums behind him.

I've played drums for 40 years, but I'm a guitarist.

Buy a decent set and have fun.
