Hopefully no further than an hour from the house, as usual. We'll see. Elk seem pretty scarce around here, unless you want to herd-shoot a cow in someone's hay.

So. central Idaho. We hunt cows. If we don't draw, there are a couple late open hunts with lots of tags. There are also lots of hunters which is why we try to draw for an earlier hunt. This year we ran into the migrating herd and 5 of us got 4 cows all the same day.

Wammer, in for Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming “permits”. If I strike out it’ll be musket branched bulls here on the westside

Turnaround at the plant with blocked vacations during hunting season this year so no CO trip for me. Probably just have to hunt the later hunts here around the house.

Don’t know yet. Wifey may be ready to burn some points but has never used a muzzleloader. I think she should go for 1st season on a backcountry hunt with the goats. She wants do a high country early buck hunt. I’ve been eyeballing one of those too. Got a little more time to decide, unless I pull the trigger on Wyoming.

What I'm sitting on for elk:
WYO - 13 pts NV - 13 pts UT - 12 pts CO - 6 pts
Only state I could pull for sure would be a CO MZ tag. I don't have an good iron sighted setup and if I travelled, I'd have to find some BH-209 on the road, which would be a BIG risk. If a 'Fire member wanted to do a drop camp MZ elk hunt, I'd be game this year or next.
Probably won't put in for WYO. My son and I are thinking about horseback, guided in a wilderness area.
WIll apply for NV and UT as always. Apply for top units and get a guide if I draw - too old (59 next fall) to hunt solo.

I'd like to say back home in my native CO since I have 22 preference points. But they PI$$ED me off with the fee increase and requiring me to buy a license I have no use for just to apply so I doubt I ever hunt that state again now that I am a resident of TX.

I don’t blame you! NR fees are high but somewhat in line with most Western states. Just buy an OTC bull tag or leftover cow tag and skip the SG license to qualify for the draw. Happy Trails

Same as every year, at home, here in Saskatchewan. Over the counter tags, during the rut, ( last two weeks of September) either sex. Worked 100% for me for the last 28 years or so. See no reason to change or try anywhere else.

If I get drawn, here in New Mexico. For us New Mexico residents, that would seem to be a no-brainer. There are so many elk here and many good choices of units. OTOH, I recall Mudhen's telling us that he also had a friend with a ranch in Southern Colorado where he could hunt and thus completely fill the annual needs for his freezer. I believe he told us in 2019 at Armijo Springs that he was by then letting his grandchildren do the hunting for him! Norm

All I know right now is not where I hunted last year, which was the same spot as the previous six years. Major wind storm in the area took down half the trees and walking through the woods is literally impossible now.

Got guided hunt in utah Friend drew Arizona late rifle that hopefully I’m going to help him tag his first elk. Debating if I can swing one more week for in home state of Oregon. I guess I’ll just swing for the fences when applying . If anyone has any tips/info on AZ, A6, please let me know
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I always hunt my home unit where I live. I've done that since the 50's. No need for maps or compass.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

I hunt southeast Montana. No outfitter so we only get cow tags. There are some Huge Bulls we've seen every year!

Hey mtnsnake. Been hunting 54 since '88. Didn't make it out this year because of work. Just saw the hunt stats. The bulls killed for all 4 seasons looked good. Why such high numbers in 3rd and 4th ? Was it a dry summer like 2 years ago when the herds came down early or did someone shoot off some fireworks over at Castleton Ranch ?

I'm not sure yet. I'll be at the Maverick station ready to go early so I can just follow a serious looking guy with a quad in the back.

Colorado, Unit 54, 3rd rifle. Cow if I draw: OTC bull if not.

We all live where we live for many good reasons, but I’d have to think long and hard about being in a state where I could not get an over the counter deer or elk rifle tag. Just sayin’.

We need to make some decisions on Idaho's elk draw in the next couple of weeks. There are 5 of us who hunt together. Last year none of us drew. There was a late cow hunt just NW of here with 2500 tags. It was intended to reduce cow numbers. The last week of Nov, 3 went to one area of this unit and 2 of us went to another. There'd been some weather and the elk moved. The 3 ran into them and got 3 elk. They called us and we drove 5o miles, getting there late after noon. I got 1 that day. We ended up with 4 elk for 5 of us, all shot the same day.
The hunt did what the F&G intended so for this year they reduced tags from 2500 to 700 and shortened the season from 30 days to 21. We need to decide whether to apply for a draw hunt with an 85% chance of drawing or to hope we can get some of these late tags again.

Not Montana for me too - the big game combo used to be a pretty sure thing but not this year. I have a very slim chance of drawing a NR ND deer tag otherwise my hunting options are screwed for ‘21.

the fun thing about having lots of different interests within the shooting sports hobby, and living 45 minutes from 3 shooting ranges and 2 hours from a million acres of desert is.... when you don't get drawn for elk.... again.... you can choose from: NRA/CMP service rifle, Trap, Olympic/bullseye Pistol, Quail hunting, metallic silhouette, 3-gun, smallbore rifle, rabbit hunting, Palma/F-class, sporting clays, coyote calling, muzzleloading, squirrel hunting, IDPA, cranking on the reloading press, IPSC, Skeet, PRS..... there sure isn't time to watch TV!

I'll suffer through another wyoming elk season with few elk and lots of grizzly bears.
Really wish I could move somewhere else to elk hunt. Put in for some west side of the Bighorns, Not far and no grizzlies.

Bro in law and I both got Montana combo. DIY in SE Montana for deer and head to Lewis Clark NF area for elk when we get our bucks. We got 2 weeks to do it.

Eastern Washington, Archery. I hunted e WA 16 years, mostly archery. I gave up because they kept reducing archery tags every year. Spike only elk now for archery? I think an archery elk bull tag takes at least 10 years now to draw. Indians still shoot a lot bull elk in Wa almost year round Archery elk in Idaho for me and maybe pick up an Oregon archery elk tag too

I’ll be adding N. Alabama whitetails to my hunts and likely won’t be in E. Washington as late as hunting seasons in the future. Tired of the liberal bullshit politics and high azz taxes!
