What size primer do you use for: Large or Small? I know that 45 ACP can be small or large? How do you tell or know? Is it preference or will they all fit?

9mm

40 SW

45 ACP

45 LC

9mm and 40 use small pistol primers. As you said, 45 ACP comes in both small and large primer pockets for pistol primers. The 45 LC comes with large pistol primer pockets. But the 454 Casull, a lengthened and thickened 45 LC case, has pockets for small rifle primers (same pocket size as small pistol primers).

The size of the primer pockets dictates what primer you use. For many cartridges, there is only one option. For a growing number, there are a couple options. All small primers are the same dimensions, whether designated for rifle or pistol. Large primers come in two heights, the shorter for pistols, and the taller for Rifles. The primer pocket sizes correlate with the primers they are designed for.

In theory; my calipers say otherwise. I've have large rifle and pistol primers that measure the same height.

Here is a table of primer dimension specifications, from Ballistic Tools that I mentioned in the thread about 9mm primers.
