Is it possible to convert a Ruger Hawkeye convert from .270 to .35 Whelen?
I have seen this excellent Ruger bolt action, stainless, with open sights, in .270, for sale cheep.
I would love to get it and convert (bore out the barrel?) to .35 Whelen.
Is this possible? Any gunsmith that can do this project?
Thanks.

That would be a hell of a good caliber in that rifle.

1. Never tell everything that you know.

Yes, JES is the way to go for your project.

I had JES do a .338 Fed in a Rem 722. Great work and turn-around was quick. The rifle shoots with my varmint rifles, though I buy a lot of copper cleaner lately.

Yes its possible. JES can do it. But if it's not a shooter to begin with don't expect it to be one when you get it back from JES. Unless the bore is toast. If it is a shooter it still will be when the rebore is done

But I want to keep the sights! Make it a REAL heavy duty extreme weather rifle.

That would be a hell of a good caliber in that rifle. Yea... I keep seeing these new 'extreme weather rifles' yet they don't even have open backup sights (and most now days are plated and not real stainless steel.) I know Ruger makes a guide gun but only in .30-06 as for a 4 shot magazine. All others are 3 shot mags. Now if Ruger would make that guide gun in .35 Whelen then, well, that is it! But they don't. And I see .270s rather often. I see these Hawkeye Guide Guns for around $1200!!! Ridiculous! But I can get that gun for $450 at that shop and then after $400 (rebore and shipping) I still save $300 or so!

The rebore by JES is certainly less than $400

Way less than $400. And turnaround is very quick.

At least now you’ve learned to not pass up a good solid gun you can purchase cheap enough to recover or make money on. Don’t worry, we’ve all had to learn that lesson one way or another. Now, if you want a Whelen just go find yourself a donor and send it to JES. And don’t worry about the front sight, those are easy to put on.

Would it not be better to just rebarrel the rifle?
