On May 6th I acquired an 1899 savage model H takedown in 25-35 made in 1913(ser#119xxx). Its shoots fantastic with the Williams peep sight. Wood has been refinished. The mystery is the 24 inch barrel. So I took it to a an 85 year old gunsmith yesterday. He had to take a huge rubber mallet and bang the reciever while the barrel was in a vice to unscrew the barrel. He didnt think the barrel was ever taken off. Was extremly dry and a little rust coated. After wiping both inside the receiver and barrel threads and then coating with oil she looked almost new. Bore is in great shape. He said barrel looks factory to him but never saw one in 24 inches. I remeasured barrel while apart- 24 inches. Only marking under the barrel is a zero or an O. The bore has a crown to it. Do you guys think its the original barrel?

No other roll stamps on the barrel would be unusual.

Unless I missed it in another post, you don't mention if the barrel address matches the year of the rifle? To my understanding, all replacement barrel's are 24". But, I don't know if they were made in the lightweight configuration. But, that could explain such a pristine bore?
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

From your May post: Just got done cleaning a Savage 1899 H? TD in 25-35. Ser # 119xxx. Has a 24 inch round barrel with a Willams peep sight. All numbers matching. Has the metal crescent butt. I believe made in 1911? Hopefully Jeff G will post the picture. Is it safe to shoot the new Hornady or Winchester ammo in it? Believe it or not I looked at another 25-35 savage last month! Amazing all the rarer rifles/calibers coming to the surface lately. TY First problem is that 1899H's didn't have a crescent buttplate. Your rifle is an 1899A, as Loggah and I mentioned then. It's quite likely the barrel was cut down, or a special order. The crowned muzzle would make me lean to cut down. Not that uncommon, unfortunately. Did the barrel come off with just a quarter turn and remove, or did it have to be unscrewed the entire way? we need the barrel address. It looks like it has the heavier barrel used on the 1899A. According to the serial number it should only take a quarter turn to remove the barrel unless it is a later factory barrel.

Barrel comes off with a quarter turn. So an H or TD H would only have a shotgun butt? Barrel address is as follows: top of barrel 25-35, Manufactured by the savage arms company Utica NY USA. second line reads --- PAT Feb 2 1893 . Oct 3 1899 May 25 1909 June 1 1909. Left side stamped Savage Hi pressure steel Model 1899. I didnt know they made 1899 A s in take down model. Thought they were too early? Ser # not stamped any where else on gun except bottom of reciever. Only guns I have ever seen that were cut down had flat bores but Im only 49 yrs old. Still wet behind the ears I guess. 1899A takedowns are one of my favorite 99s, no idea why I just like them.
Is there a serial number on the back ( "inside" ) of the buttplate or on the butt of the stock under the plate?

Ser # stamped under the butt plate and stock matches receiver 119xxx. That stock definately belongs on that rifle! This is getting interesting to say the least

An 1899H of that vintage is a featherweight. It would have a hard rubber buttplate, and the buttstock under it is drilled out more than normal to lighten the weight. It would have a 20" barrel with the front sight being an integral base rather than a blade in a dovetail. The barrel profile is also much thinner. When it doesn't have a hard rubber buttplate, the normal replacement is a steel shotgun buttplate - smooth or serrated depending on timeframe. The 1899A standard would have a crescent buttplate and 26" barrel with front sight being a blade in a dovetail. It could be special ordered at other lengths, but it wouldn't have a crowned muzzle. So I have a numbers matching 1899 A take down. With a 24 inch barrel that may or may not be correct? At least its in a rare caliber and shoots great with hornady 110 grainers. Thank you gentlemen.
