Look how rounded those primers are with AA-2460.
Looks like a job for AA-2230.

Still life entitled "Three that Bag Well: A Bill Bagwell Bowie, a .458 WM+ and a .338/378 WBY"

[Linked Image]

The +1100-yard gong that gunner500 might try with the .458 WM+, like he does with his .338/378 WBY
(I recommend the 500-gr TSX at 2250 fps and 3.780" COL for a single-loaded plinking round, barely off the lands.
That was 78.0 grains of AA-2230 with a 24-7/8" CZ barrel in one of my 3.4"-magazined rifles):

[Linked Image]

Shooting position +1100 yards from that gong with .338/378 WBY:

[Linked Image]

I would recommend a tall bipod and a sitting position for the .458 WinMag+.

LOL, You got em Ron, not one mistake in the pics descriptions, Thank You very much for posting the pics, it's funny, I was talking to an old buddy on the phone last night, told him I had to burn 20 rifles to get "down" to the 375 H&H, "WTF? he said, you are crazy old man!" grin

I can see you really like Fubars M98 458, it's a beautiful rifle, bet it shoots as good as it looks.

The little brown hay meadow in the center of the pic is where I was, on south in the thicket across the creek next to the hi-way under the shadowed hill across the road, 1125 yards up to the gong on the mountain, that big 338 put three of those 300gr Accubonds in 10 inches that day, iirc it took me 27 MOA to get em up there leaving at 3000 fps, not a bad stick and move hunting rig.

Would be fun firing a 458 that far, may have to have machine shop buddy mill me out a 60 MOA rail and put a 5.5-22 Nightforce on and see if I could reach it. cool

gunner500,

I could not resist putting up irfubar's beautiful M98 .458 WM, again, and he claims it happened by accident !
I also cannot resist trying to get you to shoot at your 1125-yard gong with your beautiful M70 Classic .458 WM+.

Well, accidents do happen, even if we help them along I guess ; ]..............off the top of my head, I'd need 80 MOA to get a 450gr TSX to 1125 yards leaving at 2400 fps, could be done I bet! laugh

All I can say is gunner500 is not short of a dollar, nor taste. The guns in the first pic alone exceed my lifetime gun and ammo budget grin

Can I ask who the 577 and 500 double are by?

LOL, Thanks for the compliments 158XTP, the 577 is a Verney-Carron, 500 Nitro is an Alfred Schilling custom boxlock built on a Merkel action.

Already done a test of sorts with the 577, it has 26 inch barrels and regulates perfectly to the sights with the 750gr TSX at 2076 fps over H-4350 powder, I shot a 55 gallon steel drum filled with water lengthways at 25 yards, at the shot, the main banded lid blew, the threaded filler cap pulled it's threads and came dancing back to me on the right side, the drum split at the seam, a huge dog knot was knocked in the bottom of the drum, I cant explain the tremendous hydraulic/displacement effect, it simply has to be seen to be believed/understood.

I saw that action firsthand last October in Tanzania, after Leopard crawling 60 yards through the wet river sand, I stood and fired at a huge old Cape Buffalo dagga boy in a herd of six, holding my fire until the river reeds blew an opening to shoot through, at 16 yards, the 750gr TSX caught the ancient bull in the last rib on his left side as he stood on a hard quartering away angle, at the shot the bull fell stiff legged and began his death bellow, I quickly moved left and gave him a solid through both shoulders, the skinners handed me a perfectly expanded 750gr TSX from under the hide on the 'front' of the bulls right shoulder under the hide, it nearly made it out.

Damn nice looking rifles. How is it shooting the 400 H&H and 400 Whelen with a steel buttplate?

Thanks Just a Hunter, both rifles weigh around 9lbs all up ready to go, the 400 Whelen fires 400gr Woodleigh Weldcore softs and solids at 2255 fps, the 400 H&H drives 400gr A Frames and BBW#13 solids at 2400 fps, both are easy on the shoulder, may be case design as to recoil impulse/velocity, I don't know, but don't find either uncomfortable from the bench, and certainly don't feel "or" hear either when firing at game.

Very nice stuff gunner500. I had a 585 bolt action wildcat done in about 2000, its pictured in my 3rd post here. Not exactly the classiness of your gun but about identical effect to that you describe on water filled drums grin I never got to take mine on African DG , thanks for the hunt report on how yours did. Very good to know big=results.

158XTP, WOW! I've heard tell of 750 grains at over 2500 fps in those cannons, ho lee hell, that'd have to boot! and YESSIR, the first shot HURT that old Buffalo, and hurt him bad, very glad he died so quick, he is the oldest Buff my PH had ever seen, hard bosses worn completely smooth, I owed it to the Noble old Beast, he spent every waking minute since birth staying alive amongst the lions, probably saw over 100 lions on that trip.

Thanks You Fury01, they are a hell of a fun hobby, bordering on addiction ; ]

Elkhunternm, I really like your 404 Jeffery. I want one, but don't need one, of course its never about need. I already have three .375 H&H rifles and a 416 Rem Mag. along with my 45-70. If I can figure out how to post pics, Maybe I can throw a couple of pics up of my 375's, its one of my favorite medium bore calibers. You guys have some beautiful rifles for sure.

RC,
I have come close to your 450gn TSX @ 2400fps using a Model 70 with 22" barrel.
My load was 72gn of H322 over a Fed 215 for 2381fps. (Hodgdon lists 71gn for 2220fps but just states using a soft point @ 3.340 OAL at roughly 61kpsi)
OAL for this load was 3.338".
The Barnes Vortex factory load for this bullet weight has an OAL of 3.328" and a velocity of 2133fps.

I always set my 35P up around 12-15 feet to avoid the blast and never correct to muzzle velocity, as I am never precise in my screen position.
John
