Game cam is showing a coyote in front of my stand which overlooks a well used deer trail . Yesterday when I went in I found deer hair in front of the cam . Looked around but found no corpse . Nor anything on camera .
Weird, but definitely upped the urge to get rid him .
About the size of a large German Shepard . Thinking of using a road kill deer for bait and shotgun with number 4's as shots are limited to 50 yrs or less . Think it will get the job done ?

Yep...if its the size of a large German Shepherd, its either a wolf, or you need to call the Guiness Brothers.

From what I understand Wolfes are mating/crossing with coyotes.

Why not a rifle? Or if you’re using a shotgun maybe some bigger shot. I’ve killed coyotes and bobcats while bird hunting using 7 1/2s, 6s, 5s, 4s, and 2s but 50 yards is stretching it. Lead BBs are supposed to be the business but they’ve been extinct since before I was born.

Never hunted coyote , but looks big to me . But maybe I'm just over estimating his size , what do you think ?

Just looks like an average coyote to me. Either have expectations to shorten the range, 50 yards is too far for lead #4's, or get some larger shot like No. Four Buckshot. Pattern your gun, choke and load to determine how far your combination can maintain a consistent killing pattern.

I’d use a center fire rifle, 12 ga #4 buck or 12 ga #2 lead or tungsten.

It’s a 10 gauge browning pump with a buck kicker full choke . It patterns pretty tight .
I guess if I use road kill I should be able to get a still shot off .
I got some 110 gr hollow points loaded in 308 that shoot pretty good , that ought to open him up .
Going tomorrow morning to look for road kill , supposed to get in the teens tonight . Figure that’ll help with the smell a little . Then warm up into lower 40’s tomorrow , that ought to catch his nose .

Lot of drama over a coyote....for every one you see, there are a dozen more you don't. They aren't killing your deer, but they are fun to call and shoot..

I've SEEN coyotes kill grown deer.
All critters are also very vulnerable during the birthing process, which is when we lose calves, and occasionally, cows to coyotes.
Young of the year are very vulnerable to coyotes, also. Over 1/2 of newborn antelope don't survive to 1 year old, much due to predators.

Studies in some areas have shown 2/3rds of the fawn crop are taken by coyotes...hardly an inconsequential number....

I think you are really wrong here. Not only do they take deer but also new born calves, sometimes as the cow is still trying to deliver.

I'm fully aware of the impact that coyotes have on the deer herd..and it's minimal. They do kill some fawns, and while we've all heard the stories about them taking full grown, healthy deer, the reality is that this is so rare as to be a non concern. If anything, it's the natural order of things.

As for their predation on cattle operations, I am again intimately familiar. Yes, coyotes do take the occasional calf but I am firmly convinced that the vast majority of the deaths attributed to coyotes are still-born calves scavenged by predators.


That being said...I prefer coyote hunting to all other types. I enjoy calling them more than anything else, save maybe turkey. I do feel the concern over a sole coyote on a trail camera is a bit overblown.

Why not set a trap for him?
