Just as the title says, what in your opinion is the gun to have that'll take a beating and keep on shooting?

Hard to think of a more robust gun than a Ruger. Single action or double action. Especially an older Redhawk if you can find one.

Get yourself an old Model 28 S&W. Alternatively, a Ruger Redhawk.

Stoutest 357 Revovler ever built. Next in line would be the GP-100 and the BlackHawk.

Freedom Arms 353...at least the equal of a Redhawk, will cost more.

Both are overkill for the 357. An N-frame Smith or Ruger Blackhawk will last a lifetime of magnum loads.

The FA M83 357 is pretty stout...

The M-27 & M28 S&W built on the N-frame probably stouter than the GP-100

Thanks for the input, I've been eyeing the Ruger GP100 as the most likely candidate, but always interested in what others here think.

I already have a Redhawk and a Bisley in 45 Colt and not much more robust than those two for sure ( yeah, the FA M83 is like a bank vault, Ed!), but consider them filling more of a specialty niche for me, I should have been more specific. I'm thinking along the lines of DA EDC for both town and country/back country where the reliability in adverse conditions would be most important, at least as far as revolvers can realistically be counted on. But also for self defense training because I don't have a lot of time with a revolver and want to learn if for no other reason than just because (channeling Bill Jordon?). I also have a bunch of 357 brass and bullets that need to get shot for trigger time and avoid burning up the 9mm supply.

I've read the Smith has a slightly thicker cylinder wall than the Ruger cyl. but from what I can tell the Ruger appears to be more robust overall, cylinder lock up, trigger group etc. Yes, No?.

The Smith 27/28 isn't even close to a 6 shot Redhawk for cylinder wall thickness.

The Colt New Service is right there as well, though it's kind of an afterthought.

I was comparing to the GP100 in your post.

Ruger makes the most robust of the "mainstream" revolvers. Having said that, I prefer a Smith & Wesson. More than enough strength for any rough service that I am going to put it through in my lifetime. Rugers have been known to have issues with chamber throat sizes. If too tight, they can be relatively easily fixed. If too big, have to replace the cylinder. Get a good one, you are set. In my opinion, some Ruger models are just overkill strong in some areas. I have a friend that has a Ruger Redhawk stainless that is built like a tank and a great shooter. Having said that, I would not trade my same caliber S&W stainless for it. Again, just my opinion. My advice is to choose the one that you like the best that will fit your needs.

I’ve carried and shot my 586 quite a bit.

But if your looking at Rugers, then aesthetics don’t matter much. smile

S&W frames are forged. Ruger frames are cast. S&W's are stronger than you think.

Shoot a S&W next to a Ruger. If you like a good trigger and a delicate hammer fall, you will pick the S&W. But if you don't care about that, a GP100 4" is hard to beat.

A 586 or 686 has it all. The seven shots (686 plus) have the cylinder stop cuts between the cylinders. Stronger than the six shooters.

Looks like they were discontinued last year, but I would think that a Dan Wesson would have to be in the running as well. Maybe not the top spot, but at least worth considering.
