Wooo! 16k a pop!

My little guy found a bat today. He was kinda fuggin’ with it. The bat was kinda wonky. Flipping over and back hissing like a possum. Pretty sure it didn’t bite him though.

I took the bat to the county lab. Hoping it comes back neg.

Did it have a white nose?

The claim by the head nurse was that the two welts were so close together that they were very possibly the fang punctures of a " Vampire Bat."

It would be funny if it weren't so.......
Funny.

I can only guess that the nurse mixed up Pennsylvania with Transylvania, the REAL place that Count Dracula lives. 😐

The poor kids took a nap and one had a couple mosquito bites I said.
I asked if the windows were open or closed.

The bedroom window was closed.
I asked how the "Vampire Bat" entered the room.

It might have somehow squeezed in through the closed door and frame was her suspicion.

Where was it when the mom came in?

It went out the same way.

Did you know that Vampire Bats don't even live in S. Western Pennsylvania???
🙄

Don’t believe it did, Geno.
Lab lady remarked it was a big one though!

I think it was a common brown bat. Kid said it fell off the roof so maybe it was just stunned. He said he didn’t touch it but I ain’t inclined to take the word of a 3 year old if it comes back rabid. Same kid turned up last week with a poisonous newt in his pocket. Lol.

Hope it's neg. Used to do the rabies necropsies in the virology lab in fairbanks. You should have results tomorrow, if not tonight.

Good luck to your fella.

I had to get the shots back about 2006 or 2007. Had a steer on pasture that wasn't right, brought it in to the barn and was working with it so we got slobbered on but good. After the steer died, and I mentioned to the Vet that the moo sounded 'funny', he said we better get it tested. Apparently, that is a sign of rabies in cattle.

Anyhow, I got 6 shots of the IG stuff and a coworker (about 75 lbs lighter weight) got 5 shots. Since there was no bite, I got one in each shoulder, each thigh and each butt cheek. It was Workers Comp but the hospital bill for me was 14K, my coworker was just shy of 10K. Plus we had to get the follow up shots but I think I also got one on Day 28 in addition to days 1, 3, 7, and 14. None of them hurt, just a bit of mild soreness.

The Vet had been vaccinated but had to get booster shots (2?).

The 3rd guy on the farm hadn't been exposed but got vaccinated because other cattle might have been exposed to the sick one. That was 3 shots and about $500 IIRC. Steers were quarantined and couldn't leave the farm for 6 months to be sure none of the rest had it.

Does the kid know any witches? Maybe some offered him a popsicle to do some foraging for them.

Eye of newt and a little bat wing can brew up some pretty powerful stuff I've heard.

Yes, I know.
It was my little attempt at sarcastic humor about the Transylvania comment.

The Q&A was the summary of the conversation we had. I asked the questions.

Been exposed many times due to profession. But, I been vaccinated since 1989. I get boosted every 3-4 years when getting ready to go hunt Africa now. Haven’t seen a rabid horse now in years...but have seen quite a few.

When I was teaching at a veterinary college. We had one come in an exposed many students as horses (as well as cattle) don’t act typical. Fortunately, vet students all vaccinated in 1st year.

Never known anyone that has gone through it.

Anybody here?

Back in the day, way back in the day, it was 14 shots (one a day) in the stomach area and they hurt. First 2 wasn't as bad as the last 12. They rotated from side to side each day and after the 2nd shot, both sides were sore, but they still poked you.

A friends wife had to take them about 20 yrs ago and he told me it was 3 shots. I dont remember if it was 3 in 3 days, or 3 in a week, or what. I've been told since then that it is 1 shot, but that's hearsay, I dont know anyone that's had the one shot.

I was bitten by a dog whose owner was to lazy/cheap to get rabies shots for. I had to think about getting the shots.

I was told that the shots weren’t that bad. I didn’t get the shots and didn’t get sick.
