Are they worth it? I don't have 220 at my house. I do have a lincoln 125plus mig but now I need to weld on a thumb for our mini excavator.
Can the 110's do it or is it playing with fire?
Been more than a few years that I ran a stick but my little mig can only do so much.

A 110 volt welder won't be big enough for welding a thumb. The thickest you can probably be about 1/8" steel. If you don't have a 220vac dryer or electric range that you you could make an extension cord for, how about a generator?
You really need a 220 volt machine for what you are looking to weld.

My generator's do have 220. Never plugged into that side of the gensets. They run smooth, so output shouldn't be a problem.
I'll look into the 220's and hope my 4500w generator will run it
Everything in the house is gas....go figure

I used a new 9300W generator to run a welder just yesterday, if that helps.

I'm not an electrician, but everything in my box says 110. So far I haven't found a standard 220 plug anywhere in the 7 years I've been here.

try it before you buy it .you will prob. need 8000 w gen to run a 200 amp stick welder .for a mini hoe you will need at least 100/125 amps for a 1/8 inc 7018 rod

Even where the old location of washer and dryer is your standard 110 GFI outlet.

Your dryer is 220 and so is your HVAC- you can put a dryer plug on a welding machine.
110 arc welder- I have a Millermatic 110 stick welder- we use it for anything except the heaviest welding- will weld 1/4 steel just fine. It will run on any generator or household outlet with 15 amps= almost all.
It's absolutely worth every penny I paid for it - and stick welding can be done anywhere in any weather.

I've welded 3/8" and 3/8" steel to each other with a Hobart 125 amp, 110 volt wire feed. Strongly pre heat the work site with a propane rosebud torch, and multiple pass weld the work. The preheat really helps the small welder melt a puddle in the weld. Those welds on a Gannon box scraper are still working 5 years later.

My brother is an electrician, hopefully he can find the time to come over and help. House was built in 50's. You'd think it would have 220

Another reason I asked about 110 is for at our property. Stick is better IMO anyway but I will only have a generator. No power.
In theory, if shidt brakes I can just load it up and bring it home. My life don't work that way, gotta plan for the worse without buying multiple machines if possible

Been more than a few years that I ran a stick but my little mig can only do so much. Do you have a dryer (non gas)? And no 110/won't cut it. Try a weld shop. It's worth not having the thumb fail at an inopportune moment... But your backhoe could probably crank out 220.

Just a thought, but years ago, when I decided I wanted something big enough to run the whole house in a power outage, I bought a gas-fired Miller welder. Enough AC to run everything in the house without the lights going dim when the water pump kicked on, and I had a lot of use for it between power outages as well.

I called an electrician and he put in a 220 plug where I needed it, right by my Lincoln 220 AC/DC welder. I don't remember exactly what he charged, but it wasn't outrageous.

Your asking it to do a lot. I doubt you could run enough amps to burn a 1/8 rod for more any length of time at all without enterupting the circuit. You might get by with 1/16 or 3/32 but even if it would carry the amps it would be sloooww going.

Brothers coming out tomorrow. I showed him my box and he said I got 220 30 amp . He wasn't to impressed. It was via pic so who knows.
I'll see what can be done. I called around today and it's $80/hour to have it welded on but would be nice to do it myself
