A San Francisco Democrat has introduced a bill that would ban black bear hunting in California, despite a bear population at its highest levels in decades and repeated conflicts with the wild animals in Lake Tahoe and other high-tourist areas

On Monday, state Sen. Scott Wiener introduced Senate Bill 252, “The Bear Protection Act” sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.

The bill would ban California’s sport hunting season that now allows for 1,700 bears killed in the fall and early winter. Under the bill, bears could still be killed under a permit to protect public safety, livestock and for scientific research.

If this happened, would more Californians get mauled?

Quite likely when the population grows.

This legislation is not based on science!

Locally, around Lake Tahoe, bear populations have grown to some of the largest densities in the country, and bears have been aggressively breaking into vacation homes, and attacks on people happen from time to time.

The bill’s introduction comes as California’s statewide bear population has more than doubled in the past four decades. Black bears are not endangered. State officials estimate that in 1982, the statewide bear population was between 10,000 and 15,000 bears. The black bear population is now “conservatively estimated” to be between 30,000 and 40,000 animals, state officials say.

California’s limited bear-hunting season has had no impact on this statewide population growth.

In 2011, with bear populations growing, the state proposed increasing the state’s annual harvest quota to 2,000 bears, but the plan was scuttled after fierce opposition from the state’s influential cadre of environmentalists and animal rights activists. The next year, the state legislature banned hunting bears with hounds in a bill pushed by animal rights activists who called it barbaric.

We have too many black bears and they should allow a spring season (not just fall season) and baiting.

You California guys need to start feeding the bears gluten free granola and Starbucks lattes. If you are going to be overrun with bears you need to make sure they look for their meals in the right places.

Their overall population of bears is much higher than Minnesota and we annually take between 2 and 3 thousand yearly. We could certainly take more. On my fall baits I average over 4 different bears per site visiting.
Yes they get what they deserve voting wise, sadly what they seem to “get” ends up here as well.

When they took away hunting bears with dogs the bear population exploded. The deer herds in California are declining rapidly. Once the deer herds are low enough they can “see” we have to stop hunting.

Of course not. It's being pushed by HSUS, one of the most radical animal rights groups in the country. They'll try to go around any science to achieve their nut case goals.

They did the same thing with mountain lions decades ago despite CA having a huge lion population and livestock losses due to lions. As a matter of fact CA will not even allow you to import a mountain lion skin from another state that you legally took it in. Look it up.

The bears are brutal on our deer fawns as well. I have a friend who just last summer watched a large bear from up close as it hunted down and killed a fawn. Fascinating how well it was done and seemingly easy for the bear.

Sounds like Average Guy wouldn't be allowed to hunt, but insiders with the right connections would still be free to hunt.

Typical.

Totally un enforceable, so a dumb ass law. But it is California.

OTOH, Kalifornia is likely to declare open season, no limit hunting on Conservatives.

This is part of the anti-hunting crowd's long range plan - use predators to reduce game animals to the point that hunting has to be stopped. It's the whole basis behind the wolf introduction.
