Besides the M8 scopes having the Golden Ring, I’m not aware of any lens coating or friction adjustment change between the two series.

I believe the M7 was Leupolds first scope with constantly centered reticles.

Mine isn't. Maybe the M8 was the first.

Decades ago I bought an M7 3x and sent it in to Leupold for service. They told me the primary difference between the M7 and the M8 was the lack of the golden ring, but they did update the glass for me while they were going over the scope.

I bought a M8 4x for my 721 300H&H this week. I like those old M8s as they are nice and long which is perfect for some of those long actions. Decent glass while still looking "right" on older guns.

Side note .... The seller I bought mine from offered me to pick one from two he had, so I did after seeing the pics. Both were well used but not abused and would be perfect on a +/- 70yr old rifle. I picked the newer of the two hoping for better glass/coatings. Long story short, he very generously gave me both M8s for the paid price of one. Wow! ...... Nice!

Interesting. I wonder if they changed that somewhere in the middle of the timeline of M7 production. The reticle in my 4x is not constantly centered.

Seems like I recall reading this was in fact a mid production (1962) upgrade to the M7 series.

My M7 4x is the first high power rifle scope I ever bought circa 1966 and I still use it on a M-S. It also has a constant centered cross hair.
