+1 Two of our favorites here, too. We haven't used the Ballistic Tip bullets for hunting, but have had very good results using 90 gr. Accubonds and either IMR4350 or H380, depending on the rifles.

Shot several deer with a Remington 722 in .244 Remington and they all died. I used 90 gr factory loads and (contrary to everything I have read) tried the 100 gr Remington factory loads and they shot 1 1/2” groups so I used them too and they killed deer too

I have a a couple 243's, and a couple 244's, and can't detect a difference on game. At times 244 brass is a bitch to find, so bought a life time supply last time I found some I like them both and believe they are under rated for deer size animals, used mine on big body Mule Deer for years.Traded off my first Ruger 77 in 6 MM because my buddies kept telling me I need more rifle and was risking loosing game, but they all wanted to borrow it for their "wives" an "kids". Sometimes I had a hell of a time getting it back. BTY the 244 works just fine in a short action, if you want or need to shoot heavies get a bigger caliber. Might try a 6 MM Creedmoor, but I have no need to shoot heavy bullets at the ranges I'm willing to shoot game.I shoot the 244 more often because I like the rifle, but recently got a Savage 99F in 243 that's a lot of fun and shoots better and I expected.

Seems like a good cartridge. What do you guys like for brass? Seems it might be easier to get the same ballistics with better brass availability using a .243 AI?

It's easy to meet or exceed factory 6mm specs in a 243 Ackley. I stuck mine in a standard-length action, 25" sporter weight barrel, and have been running cartridges around 2.95". 3300 with 103's has been a snap, and I could likely get same with 115's with the right powder.

I use mainly Remington brass but do have several hundred pieces of Winchester and older W-W Super brass.

It was the caliber in my first bolt action center fire rifle. I need to use it for deer soon. Mine is very forgiving on loads. It likes to shoot nice consistent groups.

The down side to this caliber is finding a rifle and then finding brass. Brass life is good. Most owners are not willing to part with a 6mm Remington.

I've used Winchester and Remington brass over the years and it's all been fine. A couple of years ago, I bought some Hornady 6mm brass but have not yet tried it. 6mm brass has always been much harder to find than .243 brass. There are probably very few who load for 6mm in comparison with those who load for .243.

Got mine in 1974, a Rem 700 BDL.

Mostly my youngest son uses it anymore, and he's done well with it on both mule deer & whitetail. I think all of his deer have been taken with the handloaded 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet over RL-22, for 3,000 fps and darned good accuracy.

I think my current brass batch is Hornady, but I'm not real happy with Hornady brass in general. When it's used up I'll start using some PPU brass I laid in a while back. I'm trying to help a friend out with his own 6mm and he bought some of the same brass, which I loaded up for him. I don't have any kind of firm opinion on it as of yet, but I had to swage primer pockets to get a primer to even begin to seat. I can deal with that...if those pockets stay nice and tight.

I picked up a near mint Remington Model 4 in 6mm Remington, the original owner stated it had less than a box of shells though it but he couldn’t put his hands on the leftover ammo. I sighted it in and been sitting ever since. My Grendel and 35rem got the nods this past season.

Or a 243 06 or 240 Bee, not a whole lot a difference at the average hunting ranges, just less meat to pack out.

My son has shot his 6mm about a dozen times, other than shooting at targets. Each of those dozen or so shots has resulted in a deer or hog. Cant argue with success.

I have one, this old 600 beater, inherited in 1976 but I have never taken it hunting. I should stop trying to shoot bugholes on paper, load up a handful of 85 TSX's and go kill a deer or two.

You missed the point: 243 brass is far easier to come by than 6mm.

I need to take mine out more. I have a late 60's Model 700. My dad bought it new, sold it to a coworker, bought it back for me to begin hunting with, bought it from me and I have it as an inheritance.

He had a Varmint Special and we used Speer 105 gr roundnose for the first 14 years I hunted. You can hear them thump when they land. He had some 95 gr Ballistic Tips loaded when he died. Some of the kids killed deer with them over the years.

I've loaded up the empty brass so maybe this is the year

Indeed I did! That said, 6mm brass does seem to be long lasting so a a supply will last a long time. But you are right, .243 brass does typically tend to be easier to find. That said, the Sportsmans Warehouse was out of most brass recently, save for two bags of 6mm Rem which I took home.

He also won a couple of shooting contests at Quemado if my memory serves me correctly.... that B 78 of his is a nice rifle...
