I’ve had my since 1978. I like to shoot the old buffalo bullets.

I've had mine since 1987. I had the T/C peep sight mounted on it. Using 430 gr. Maxi-balls it will shoot two shots touching with the third close to touching at 100 yards without cleaning. I've got two modern mz and would dump them and keep the Renegade if I could only have one.

It also doesn't hurt that I took my biggest whitetail ever with it.

Been using mine for 20 years, still running just fine.

I have a .50 Renegade and it shoots round balls very well. I haven't tried anything else.

I have 2. Both 54, one with 1/66 factory barrel and one with a green mountain 1/28 LRH barrel. Great shooters. Picked up a 58 big boar a couple years ago that I havnt messed with. Got to get it going.

Great hunting rifles. For some reason, I can’t hold on to the ones I buy. They sell quickly for sure.

I believe the Renegade is the second most popular sidelock TC made , the Hawken being the first. Many hunters prefer the flat butt plate that comes on the Renegade and like most of TC guns they are well built.

I had one but sold it 20 years ago. Mine was a late 70 early 80's and was very accurate. I liked the 54 over the 50 cal. stuff.

Shot a few critters with my 50. They aren't anything really nice but a solid rig. I won't be selling mine anytime. Grab some No Excuses conicals and get making smoke.

Renegades are great rifles. I've had my 50 caliber since 1974. I used to shoot Maxi Balls, but switched to 420 grain No Excuses bullets about 6 years ago. With 80 grains of Goex 2F, they will shoot into 2" at 100 yds all day long. I shoot with a Williams FP tang sight and a green fiber optic front sight. Really nice in low light.

I still have my left hand Renegade. Haven't hunted with it in years, but plan to next season. It had a 2.5 rail mount pistol scope on it for years. I just replaced the pistol scope with a peep mounted where the rear sight is supposed to go. Works well with old eyes.

Have a 58 cal Big Boar, fine little rifles, 90gr 2F under a round ball will knock a deer outta their hooves, I used to lean on that rifle with 600gr conicals, you don't have to do that, fine rifles, accurate and light enough to carry all week long.

The Renegade is a good solid rifle , but the comb is just too high for me.

Love love love my 54. No Excuses bullet, 105 grains of bp and I’m good to go.

One of the best big game caplocks ever made. My favorite old school gun, shot quite a few deer and my biggest six point bull ever.

It is a very good hunting rifle. Factory barrel is 1-48", a compromise twist for round ball or bullet. Upgrade to a Green Mountain 1-70" ( or so) twist, and you'll have a very accurate round ball shooter. If a flintlock, the frizzen is soft. There used to be aftermarket frizzens available 20 years ago which were made of high carbon steel. They threw white hot , branched sparks that showered the pan. I bought one for my .50 cal T/C Hawken flinter ( with Green Mountain slow twist barrel). Won several matches with it, and used it one year at the New England Flintlock Championships when shooting on the Maine team (we won it something like 10 out of 13 years).

I like the Renegade for what it is: a solid hunting rifle. The .54 slow twist, round ball barrel would be my choice.

Last summer I bought a brand new one, never been fired for $300 after taxes. It is a 54 cal. I like it , but not as much as my Hawken. The reason is cause it has a single trigger and it is a bit stiff. It is better for hunting than my Hawken cause the Renegade barrel is longer. I make my own roundballs for almost nothing and my patches are all but free . I make them on cold winter nights when I can keep cabin fever at bay by dreaming of warmer days and bucks in rut. I have the 1/48" twist on both guns. I get about 4" at 50 yds , but it is off a block of wood for a rest. I have 4 muzzleloaders, A TC Encore, then a TC Impact, then I bought a TC Hawken 50 cal. I like the sidelocks so much that I have not shot the inlines since I bought my sidelocks. They are just so cool to shoot , and making my own roundballs and patches make it harder to run out of supplies . I have not made my own black powder yet and only shoot black powder. ABout 60 gr. is plenty for targets too. I even went as low as 40 gr. and is still just fine in my 50. Later, Ihookem.

The Renegade Hunter had a single trigger. Could also buy single trigger conversions for regular Renegades and....the Hawken had a longer bbl than the Renegade IIRC.

Ive had 2 Renegades in .50 and one in .54 plus a Hawken .50.

Like the Renegade better than the Hawken.

Pops has a clean .50 lefty Renegade he bought just to show in Hunters Ed. Wood however is bland.
My. 54 got for cheap was dang near new and had killer wood.

Bud had a family member that got it new and shot it one day.

Another buddy came over and helped me move one day ( did not ask ) and wanted to try BP......so I went over a couple weeks later and gave him that pretty .54 and some accessories.

I wonder if he got a deer w it last yr?

Hawken were 28" bbl and Renegade was 26".
Ashland way back had shorter models of New Englander and Renegade single triggers.

I did not like the stepped bbl of the White Mountain Carbine and thought the octagon short bbl single trigger Renegade edition at Ashland was the best looking.

Never did buy one.

Had a New Englander later and after break in ( 100.roundballs over the summer)...vertical.stringing stopped and off the sandbag at 100, iron sights.....put 3 in rhe x, cloverleafed....at 100 yds.

Unfortunately that target was lost in a move.

I have had a 50 since the early 80s. Have killed several deer with it. Mine has2 triggers. I killed a doe with it a couple of years ago. I use an inline now. But still would use it if it was what the season rules required.

Salvaged a lefty 50 cal this week. Hammer wouldnt stay back. Plunger was stuck. Kroil for a bit and compress w flat of screw driver a few times, minimal movement and then a bit more.

Kroil and full cycle.of plunger twenty times and then gunscrubber and lube. Works fine.

Was proly a 150 gunsmith special, proly added 200 to the price getting it going LOL

240 gr xtp,s w/ tc breakaway sabots on top of 100grs of RS select
Water proof the nipple and cap with a tied off plastic baggie in front of the trigger guard for schitt weather....

Some people say you cant shoot a sabot round in a 1 to 48 with accuracy.

I have a Renegade in 54. Used it on elk back in my native CO. I think I have taken 5 or 6 elk with it, mostly cows but a couple spikes (this was before antler restrictions on elk) and it was deadly on them. I loaded the old Buffalo Bullets of 425 gr and used 100gr of FFG. I never recovered a bullet from an elk and never had to shoot one twice. Good shooting rifle.

I used the flint version for decades, and a 530 ball with 0.015 patch seemed to be good with 80 grains of 3F BP.
Close range whitetail deer here, so no need for more horsepower.
Sabots never worked for me, maxiballs were OK, but expensive and overkill.
Rifling is shallow, so it is a compromise barrel with the 1/48 twist. My opinion is the shallow rifling is a bigger factor than the twist.

I owned a .54 Renegade in the 80s, which as I recall had the double set triggers just like the TC Hawken.

With TC maxi-balls it was very accurate, and the build quality and stock wood was first class, just like all traditional TC muzzle loaders back then.

I had one 25 or so years ago. Bought it used, so not sure how old it was.

Great rifle. Wish I still had it.
