I can't tell you how many times I was told this sum beach was counterfeit.
Sold by northwestmagnum today if some one could post it.
Made my day when we took the butt plate off.

“We”, did you buy it? Would like some details, confused on what you mean in this post.

I've found a previous owner's name and address wrapped in waxed paper in the stock of several pre-WW2 rifles. I once has a 23AA that had fishing line, sinkers, hooks, matches, a candle, and 50 rounds of ancient .22 LR ammo in the stock. The guy plugged the hole with melted wax and tried to seal it all with a piece of rubber innertube under the butt-plate.

I bought this rifle three ( I think) summers ago from a dealer in Minnesota. He told me a woman came in with a trunk load of guns of her late husband. He had died several years ago.
The barrel band caught my eye and looking down the barrel it was full of cosmoline. It had been varnished by the owner and low and behold he had put the barrel band on backwards!
So I took it out after cleaning and shot it. Then after a while I tried to sell it. ( The barrel band was still on backwards). Oh my lord! It was crossthreaded!( the barrel band bolt)
The wood couldn't possibly be original!
It was reblued!
The toxic varnish will emit fumes and kill the pet goldfish! On and on and on.
So finally I gave up, I was going to tear it down, strip it, and get it professionally refinished to " look 👀 " original. Knowing full well all my efforts would eat up any hope of a profit in this deal. So my friend suggested we turn around the barrel band, ( he is the one that figured that one out) and check the numbers on the parts. That's when we discovered the notation on the butt stock. We decided to try it in auction before I took it to the furniture man for refinishing.
And it did have a written note affixed to the metal butt plate.
Pretty neat ending to a 99 deal for me.

Nice story Angus, thank you for filling me in. Sounds like a problem child, but worked out well in the end.

I kinda felt like Indiana jones when my buddy helped me unscrew the butt plate and saw the note.
Never forget it.
Thanks for the feed back.

And The Note! Let me guess... Saying:
"Greetings Indiana! But 'if' not him AND yet taking two persons to remove this butt plate... Hey Bubba! Kindly replace the plate unaltered and sell this rifle without further 'touching'!
Sorry... Humor only. I couldn't avoid your 'straight line'! Best & Stay Safe! John
