My favorite Wayne movie overall is The Quiet Man, followed closely by True Grit, The Searchers and Red River--in no particular order. But believe he did his best acting in The Shootist, perhaps because he was truly feeling his own mortality.

I’m really surprised by a lot of these picks.

I always thought The Son’s of Katie Elder was one of his better movies. By a mile.

Dang! Forgot about that one. (Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.) I saw it in the theater when it came out and was totally entranced. I pull it out every year or so to watch. But on the big screen... Wow!

Obviously you haven't seen many of his movies. Son's of Katie Elder wouldn't even make most people's top ten.

I can’t decide between The Searchers and Red River for first choice. Both shot in Az. Red River was shot pretty close to me.
Third choice would be The Cowboys. My father in law wrangled on it and two of my friends were the cowboy kid actors. Clay O’Brien and Mike Pyatt.

Just finished watching The Searchers. I'd say it was okay. No better. Wouldn't ever go out of my way to watch it again. Would watch The Shootist and True Grit again, though, so I count them as much better movies.

Wayne should have won the Academy for his portrayal as Ethan Edwards. By far his best on screen performance.

There is a reason he named one of his sons Ethan.

In the first place he should have been named John Ethan Wayne but the Duke's best friend John Ford didn't like that idea because to every Wayne-child he gave a coffee mug with the initials of the child's name as a gift and because they didn't like the word created in this way they named his youngest son Ethan John Wayne and not John Ethan Wayne.

And back to the question: True Grit, the one and only and very true True Grit!

Just finished watching The Shootist again tonight. It is definitely not that one. Sticking with my original all time favorite The Cowboys, and True Grit.

True Grit and Searchers tied for first, The Shootist and The Cowboys tied for second.

I always enjoyed that one too, but it doesn't seem to get much respect.

You don't hear people talking about "Cahill, US Marshall" very much either, but it is one of my favorite JW films.
