Looking fot a scope to target shoot and hunt with. Don't want a bigger tube than 30mm and prefer 1 inch. I looked at DMR II but think I want something else.

Budget?

What is your application? Woods vs prairie? Long vs short shots? Plenty of light vs. low light? Stock configuration? Lotsa variables...

If you are looking for "do it all" then a 3x9 variable.

But for fine tuning specifics matter...

A nice 3X9 Leupold VariX IIc would be a good start. Hunted and shot with one for at least 20 yrs. until my eyesite folded. If you like that one , then you can go up from there for something you can't afford to let your wife know how much you spent, like a Swaro.

Range work out to 1000 yards, elk and deer hunting.....Colorado and Wyoming terrains. Budget can be stretched. but would like to be 1000.00 or under if possible.

I have the SS 3-9 HD on mine and couldn't be happier. Precise, easy to use and rugged checks all my boxes.

I have been very happy with the Tract Toric 2-10x42 and 3-15x42 on my .308's. I have not used the turret kits that they come with but these deserve consideration.

This. If you are going to dial, and need repeatability, and dependability, for $1000 this scope will be hard to beat. Good glass too.

Man you guys must have better eyes than I do, IMO if your planning on shooting to a 1000 a 3-9x anything ain’t enough. I’d be looking in the 3-15, 4-16, 4.5-18 or more magnification.

I have a Leupold VX 3i 3.5-10x40 and like the scope but my 60 year old eyes are getting weaker.Just bought a Meopta Optika5 4-20x50 that should help.
Take a look at Meopta,Leupold,Vortex should be able to choose one to fit the .308 for a $1000 or less.

I have a couple of SWFA 3-9x42 HD's and am very pleased with them and wouldn't hesitate to go that route if you can find one. I recently purchased a Vortex Razor 3-15x42 LHT though haven't mounted it yet. Reports from others are it's good to go and might be worth a look...

Those are exclusive criteria. The same rifle you would use at 1000 yards is not one you would want to carry all day. That and a 308 at 1000 yards is problematic anyway. While you can keep some bullets and heavy loads at above mach you have to understand that the transonic range starts around mach 1.3. Some bullets slide through it and some don't.

LHT 3-15
Zeiss V4 4-16
SWFA 3-9
NF SHV 3-10

These for sub $1000 dialers, I own all but the SHV. I’d throw LRTS on there too based on its track record with folks I respect. As a side note I personally would stay away from Leupold if repeatable dialing/rtz matters to you, and it should.

Good luck
