Anyone done an unguided moose hunt. Outfitter whole shabang just no guide? Opinions, recommendations, do it, don’t do it? I’m by no means wealthy but I would be willing to scape the money together to pull off a sub 10k hunt if worth the effort. I know most guided service run 14k-30k depending on outfit with cheaper options offered for the lesser non Yukon subspecies. I want to pull this off before 40! Any help insight is appreciated.

The .270 is the greatest hunting catridge ever designed. To dispute this fact is to only justify our loonieism in owning and hunting with inferior cartridges.

I did one with a buddy from Georgia back in 2008, I hired Larry Bartellett from Pristine Ventures to set it all up. We rented a Levitator round boat from him and he put us in a good spot with plenty of moose. We could have taken a 60"+ bull the first day but my buddy didn't want to shoot one so early so he passed on it. I ended up shooting a 52"er on the 5th day, the float was 92 miles or so and we took 10 days to float it. I highly recommend Larry as a hunt planner, he does tons of research and knows his stuff.

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

There are options depending on how much effort you wanna put in it. I went guided twice in the NWT and killed great bulls. In 19 I went with a guy who needed a partner in Alaska. We used Papa Bear Adventures and killed two good bulls on our own. They provided the area, flights, equipment and advice.
Prices are rising as demand increases. They are up to $10,000 now per man and have a drawing and about a 3 year backlog. You better decide and get signed up with someone or you will never catch up on the time and money increases.
There are other options but you'll have to pick the area, book the flight service, buy and ship gear etc

Ps: My 2010, 2012 Guided moose hunts in NWT were $15,000 and $16,000. They are near $25,000 now. The 2019 Papa Bear hunt was $6,000. I'm going back in 2022 and its $9,500 now.

Thanks men. Lots to consider. My plan is to start the process this year.

Have gone twice and simply used a flying service to get us across Cook Inlet. They did some pre trip scouting, while transporting other hunters, to get us near some quarry. Got a 54 incher on the first outing. Second trip they did a fly by to see if we needed some meat hauled, saw no moose around, and moved us to a new spot. No scores though on that trip. Being non residents, we had to pass on everything seen that was sub 50 inches.

Not done a float trip, but some neighboring friends have. If taking that route, be water smart, and leave plenty of time to stop and hunt for several days. If one has to be floating every day to make his destination, there's really little time for actual hunting, and one has the exhausting tasks of breaking camp, floating, and building camp each day. Not a pleasant experience if one can't stop and smell the roses.

Trying to get my buddies out for another run, but they're getting old and worry too much.

Good luck and envious here,

After owning and running a Solar Inflatable jet boat I will never do a float hunt again. Put it in run and set up campsite one time, then spend rest of the time hunting.

At those prices you could buy a boat and motor use it and sell it when your done. About any place I can launch boat I can run.
