I'm getting set up to load 9mm Luger and I see the Hornady Custom Grade Titanium Nitride dies sets seem to be available (at a premium price).
The sets I'm looking at are part# 546515 and 546516. They are both 3 die sets. The 546516 is called a Taper Crimp Die Set. They both have the same FL sizing die and Expander die.
The difference is that the 546515 has separate Seater and Taper Crimp dies but the 546516 has a combination Taper Crimp/Seater die.
What would be the advantage of one over the other?
I'd like to find a RCBS or Lee Carbide set but they seem to be hard to find or even more over-priced than the Hornadys.
Thanks.

I much prefer seating and crimping as separate steps.

How does this work with only 3 dies?

They both have the same FL sizing die and Expander die. = 2

The difference is that the 546515 has separate Seater and Taper Crimp dies = 2

2+2 now equals 3

4 die set obviously.

Not sure what River was thinking when he typed that.

Me either, but my preference since I load on a progressive with only 5 holes is to use a seater/taper crimp die and use the hole after powder drop for a powder checker since I usually use flake powders in 9mm. I would rather not have the possibility of puffers(squibs) than to seat then crimp. If loading on a single stage or a 6 hole progressive the separate actions wouldn’t matter.

My mistake. I called Hornady today and got my answer. The 546516 is a 3 die set that has a sleeve inside the seater die that applies a taper crimp.
546515 has 3 dies with a seater die that applies a light roll crimp die, then you can taper crimp in a separate operation with another die (not included).
I will be loading on a single stage press so I will order the taper crimp set as the tech said that is more forgiving.
Thanks.

Taper is certainly preferred for auto pistols. It usually doesn't take a huge amount.

Make it simple,
Find a decent crimp die, and adjust it to whatever you are using.
I use one crimp die for 380, 9mm, 38 super, 38, 357..
All you have to do is adjust it to caliber..
I'm the weird one out though, as I don't care if I have an extra crimp die,
I can seat, and crimp if needed, but I do prefer to do it separately
