How do you use IMR 4831? I've tried it in a few rifles with mediocre success but still have a couple pounds on the shelf and could grab 8# for a reasonable price.

Currently loading for 243, 270 Win, 7mm-08, 7x57, 308 and 30-06. I see it mentioned in various recipe books for each of those cartridges, but curious about which applications others are using it. If you have some good accurate loads to suggest for any of the cartridges mentioned, or others for that matter, feel free to chime in.

I use it in my 25-06

I use it in multiple calibers. 30-06, 25-06, 7mm rem mag, 280 rem. and couple short mags. Up close to max usually. Has a little faster burn rate than H4831.

Should be very good for your .270 and .243.. The 06 with heavier loads... It is a top performer in my .25-06, but you did not mention it..

Me too, with 100 grain bullets Also used some in .30/06 with 150 and 168 gain loads, 270 130 grain too

.375 Ruger. Cannot get enough in the case to get in trouble with 235-300 gr weights. Very accurate. With 300s can match max velocities given by 4350 and RL17.

.30-06 w/180s and up. .300 Win w/150 and 168 gr TTSX, also 180 gr cup/core bullets. All very accurate.

30-06 and 190gr Hornady BTSP interlock, which is now discontinued.. It was a great combo in my rifles..

.338 WinMag plus others mentioned

I use it in a 270 to launch 140 Accubonds. Its a very versatile and useful powder to my way of thinking.

IMR 4831 is my go-to in the '06 with 150 gr bullets. Yes, not a typo. Mostly Win brass, WLR primer, I fill the case to the base of the bullet, comes out around 60 to 61 gr...in my case Hornady GMX copper 150 gr. Chrono at 15 ft avg 2890 fps. 22" bbl M-70 FWT and same in Remington Model 30 Express. 1 1/8" 5 shot group at 100 pretty common and repeatable. No unburned powder in bbl and good brass life. Also you can sub RL19 and VV N160 for about the same results. Actually the VV N160 has a slight edge in accuracy and velocity.

I tried it once in the mid-'70s when my gunshop was out of H48431. I used it for loading .25-06. As I recall, results were comparable to H4831 but with slightly less powder. I prefer H4831 only because I've used it a long time in many cartridges and it's allegedly more temperature resistant than the IMR version.

Have used it in 243,270 and 30-06 with good results.

I’ve used it with success in the 270. Where it really shined for me was the 375 H&H with 300s, super accuracy.

simple way I suggest to people who ask me...

if you would use H 4350 in a load, then IMR 4831 is pretty close, just a little slower...

I don't think you can exceed SAAMI specs in an 06 sized case with it... I know you can't exceed SAAMI specs in an 06 with H4831...

but then for an 06, I am more along the lines of a 4064, 3031, RL 15, IMR 4895 kind of guy.... same with a 270...7x 57, 260, 243 .

Should work fine for heavies in your '06, and about any bullet weight in your .270.

I went through my reloading logs I keep last night and I have recently loaded IMR 4831 to test out in 338 WM and .30-06. I hope to try it out in my 260 Rem as well.

Nothing better with 139 and 140grain bullets in the 7mm Remington mag 3175 fps and tight groups. Mb

As far as I'm concerned IMR-4831 is the t*ts for loading 6.5x55's. It shone in previous rifles and does so again with my current 6.5x55- a Ruger 1A. I was feeling antsy about the future last summer when I realized I was down to my last pound of it, so I bought a few pounds at what I thought was usurious prices: $40/pound. Nowadays I'm darned glad I did. (Although powders in general are starting to show up again in LGS's here.)
