There was a reason he hung onto that #1 and I would honor his sensibilities by hanging onto it also. But, I would make it into something that suited my own sensibilities. If altering its current state is to happen, so what- its bones are still the same bones your Dad liked. It's still the same rifle, only something you both had a hand in.
