So, Ross is wrote it next month.

I’d like to read one from Summer of ‘21 that tells us if we can buy primers for $40 per K yet.

That's the day of the month it was published. Ross departed from Wolfe around 2005.

Was kidding, but AM sorry to hear he won’t be writing for Wolfe anymore.

He’s been a top favorite of mine since at least the 80’s. Along with you & Venturino.

I hoard my gun magazines & re-read them regularly. Have ‘em going back to the 60’s.

Wolfe are top of the heap.

2001, I think. He wrote two on the Hornet, one for HANDLOADER, then another in the next issue of RIFLE, or the other way around. They appeared just in time to help me with my new Browning Low Wall. The info in those pieces, plus JB’s work with Lil Gun and CCI 450 primers, led me to true Hornet Happiness.

I struggled with my Micro A-bolt Hornet until he published that article...problem solved. I was ready to sell the rifle.

Always enjoyed his writing, and this is one of many reasons.

Ah yes, read it again just to make sure he didn't switch the .270 Win. for a 6.5 CM!

Good article there, got much of the same advise from our own Mule Deer when I was struggling to get my T/C G2 Contender carbine to shoot last summer.

It puts 5 rounds into sub MOA groups @ 100 yard pretty regularly now. Bullet run out was the main culprit, has to be the most finicky round I’ve reloaded for in the last 40 years.

The old Hornet has been a different kinda, unique round for generations. Early writers were using pistol primers with powders of the day. I've read Mic Mcpherson's stuff, Ross' stuff and others, all very interesting.

I'm in the JB camp using CCI 450 primers, Lil gun and now mainly Pw Pro 300 MP powder. I even opened my Hornets to K-Hornet and like that version better. It's easier to get enough powder in the case vs. the std. Hornet. That's just me, others will have different opinions,, which is pretty typical for this round. I rented a reamer and did it myself. I was careful and the chambers in two guns are identical.

Once you try 450's with Lil Gun or 300 MP, doubt you'll go back. The older guns were pretty slow twist, which is another challenge. 16, 14 or 12 twist makes a difference. And the mag length is limiting. I was able to alter my CZ mag, adding .1" COAL. That helps.

The Hornet is an interesting and challenging round. I've enjoyed working with mine.

The Hornet was my first “real” rifle - a Savage 340. Had a Ruger #1 too. Both were ok shooters. Got a .221 Fireball and the Hornets went down the road. The Fireball shoots rings around the Hornet.

As a youngster, I ordered a .22 Hornet 340. They sent a .222 by mistake and I kept it. Glad I did. Although the Hornet is a good one, the .222 is better. Killed a lot of crows with that rifle. Finally sold it to a good bud. Next .222 was a Rem 722. Barrel eventually was shot out. Still have it, now wearing a Hart .22-204 barrel with a 10X Zeiss. 14 twist, does great with 40 gr. bullets.

Here it is with a Rem 7, also in .22-204 but with a fast twist Brux in a Lone Wolf stock, Jewell trigger. 75 gr. SSII's over Varget is my hog killing load.

Fascinating article. Been retired almost 5 years now and have been meaning to start using my Hornet again. Did a lot with it 20 -25 years ago and Ross is right on with a lot of what he said. Mine's an old Savage 23-D from the latter 1930's and it definitely responds to neck sizing only. Sure is a fun little cartridge that seems to have quirks all its own. Always enjoy Mr. Seyfried's stuff; thanks for posting that.

I’ve enjoyed Ross’ stuff.

The Hornet is quirky for sure, but worth the effort.
