Lapping takes out the "Talley Pinch" and other stresses from wonky receiver tops. I can't fathom adding electrical tape to the inside of an already overly tight ring as one mentioned earlier in this thread. That's just adding additional stress.
Brad, Does adding tape to properly tightened/torqued rings induce additional stress to the scope or rings?

Are Lwt's for every rifle application? Nope. But for those they are appropriate for they're my first stop.

Brad, Does adding tape to properly tightened/torqued rings induce additional stress to the scope or rings? I doubt it's helpful... it is pretty thick. It certainly won't affect steel rings, but those additional pressures are going to go somewhere, and aluminum will be the first to absorb those pressures, either a scope tube, the aluminum rings themselves, or both. That's why since the 1980's I've always used rubber cement or, years back, liquid electrical tape. Either will be thinner and more secure than actual electrical tape.

I bed the bases/screws to the receiver in JB Weld epoxy at 25 in lbs.
Lap Rings.
De-burr and de sharpen any edges with a fine rattail file.
Mount scope in a thin layer of rubber cement.
Blue loctite screws at 20 in lbs.
As I say, at least 25 sets of Talleys this way, no failure. That's not to say they can't fail (obviously they can)...
Thanks for providing this info Brad as I know you have more experience with Kimbers and Tallley UL's than most here. (thumps up mate). I have pretty much done the same as you have done but I have never used the rubber cement. Might have to try that. After seeing this thread I was reluctant to use some newly purchased UL Talleys on a 35 whelen I certainly built (Kimber 84L Hunter), but I'm having second thoughts and I may just do it. I have never had a Talley UL fail or one even move in those mounts. I Have a new VX freedom 2-7x33 lined up in its box, but I am curious about these new VX3HD's Leupolds, so I may wait a bit.

Its abundantly clear that the LW's break, and often. I don't think anyone here denies it. Its abundantly clear that precautions are taken when mounting and using them. Which begs the question, why would you use them?

I’ve been using them exclusively for over 15 years. Brownings, Winchesters, Remingtons, Stiller, Pierce and Nula’s not one issue with 22 oz to 10 oz scopes. Some tough Alaska and Rocky Mountain hunts and I shoot around 1200-1500 rounds a year so I’m surprised when these threads come up. Not disputing people’s experiences but have had several scopes fail but never a Talley lightweight. I take them out of the package and simply torque to spec. I don’t really have many other options with my NULAs, just not much else out there other than Talley steel. Now that I said this I’m sure I’ll have issues. 😁

My buddy just sent me this pic yesterday. Went to mount a new scope and noticed ring is cracked 😬 Just for conversation, not starting a big fuucking deal like everything else here, do you guys honestly think that crack, and that seems to be where they crack, would comprise zero? Miss a buck? I’m saying no personally. Fire away boys

For a 2 oz penalty, I'll take some DD's and not risk it.

Miss a buck? I’m saying no personally. Fire away boys I've had two pair crack. The first one had a crack similar to that, actually a bit worse. I checked it just to see and zero wasn't changed. it was a 7.5 lb .223AI so recoil was mild and the scope was light....I'd think both of those would make it less likely for the crack to change zero.

So for sake of argument, A guy could not tighten down 1 corner, and get the same effect?? Correct?

Brother you know I'd never question your integrity, maybe him? River is down, gonna hand some paper and test some stuff. Ill start with a 340 why, ill shoot a group, loosen 1 corner, group then ill loosen 2 on one side...

Hell that guy still uses LW's. I just don't understand it. They break but sometimes the break doesn't effect zero. Trying to justify just doesn't compute in my data driven brain.
