The E may not have had tang sight provisions ot a counter windor for remaing cartridges. On the early F does it have a counter hole? So the 1960 F’s and DL’s did not have them. Except for special order guns, every 1895/1899/99 from 1895 to 1959 had tang screwholes for peep sights. “The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. It's been discussed before. Rick has a picture of one where, underneath the finish, you can see "do not drill" written on the tang.
