I was talking to my neighbor this morning, about the peeling clearcoat on his five year old Highlander! I have come to the conclusion that not one automobile manufacturer, can paint a vehicle worth crap.
They seem to make engines and transmissions, that last 250,000 miles, but the paint is gone at half life ! I started looking while driving through town, it doesn't matter who built the car or truck. Paint jobs are second rate! Anyone else been noticing this, or am I just in an area thats hard on paint!

Could be related to our elevation I guess. The more I look the more I see! Were only 4100 ft, less ozone protection than flatlanders cars I quess! Just wondering if others had the same problen!

We all have the EPA to thank for that substantial problem.

Indeed. OEM paints are water based due to the EPA crackdown on VOCs associated with solvent based paints. Ive a mid 2000s chevy that is perfect other than the damned paint peeling off the hood. It’s all manufacturers too. Some of it was reformulated to fix this problem but they’re still nowhere near as good as the old stuff.

Some people take care of there stuff others don't. With that said some manufacturer's such as GM in the mid nineties had a terrible rash of mostly white vehicles peel. Keeping a vehicle clean and properly waxed goes a long way.

Yup. My buddy had a pink '92 F150. It was red when he bought it. My '95 Silverado was too rusty for me to care when the paint started to go.

I noticed red, white, and blue peel more than others. Especially white. And it is not company specific.

I bought a used bicycle in an uppity scale neighborhood drove the peeling 98 f150 and got followed and had my license written down. Sorry I washed it.

I am thinking of wire brushing it clean and painting with a roller

My white 2013 F150 looks like the day it was made and it hasn't spent a single night indoors.

My '09 Tacoma still looks great and it's got 262K miles on it. Never been waxed. Got the Ziebart Diamond Gloss paint protection on it along with a complete rustproofing from the local Ziebart place just after I picked it up at the end of August, 2008. Supposedly the paint protection protects against UV damage like fading besides protecting from minor scratches. The truck is dark green, sits outdoors year round, and shows no ill effects. I'm about 500-something feet above sea level so that probably helps versus high altitudes.

I have a 99 f150 that the paint job still looks great. Park under the oak tree and it gets washed when it rains.

It's so hard to find a confederate flag to go with the Ren DIY camo job.

If the clear coat was put on at the wrong time (too late) it will peel no matter who does it... I had a paint shop for a few years.. and learned a lot about basecoat and clear coat paint jobs... no I will not paint your car now I am too old.

2004 F150 I drive has paint that looks new, and it spent the first 11 years of its life living in the great outdoors.
