It would be about my last choice. However I bet more deer are taken with a 22LR than most folks think. Im afraid of too much meat loss with a 22...

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

I'd go with the CCI 17 grain. The 20 grainer seems like overkill

It has been quite a while since I have read such a stupid question.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

17 HMR does not work very well ,22 mag is fine or bigger will work just fine, forget about using the 17 HMR. Too much meat loss? So why did you decide to troll this site? Stupid? To pick on dumb rednecks like you.... So you think acting stupid is picking on "dumb Rednecks"? Idiot.

I don’t know why you insist on shooting them so dead. You’ll darn near take their fur off. Too big a caliber? No the caliber is fine. It’s your chambering that’s all wrong. .177 Crosman 760 and aim for the eye. If that doesn’t work club him over the head with it. I disagree, the western air is generally thinner and will not provide the consistent trajectory that the 177 is famous for. He should look at the happy medium of the 17 Hornady Mach two. Guaranteed to be DRT without shattering the hunter's shoulder.

I can attest to the fact that a 22LR will kill a deer, so a 17 should as well.

No , not in the eye. Just shoot them in the earhole. What about the arsehole? he said out west, not texas. as for the 17 HMR I personally wouldn't use it, they are deer, not elk. I'd opt for the HM2 version in a short action. it's be lighter and not burn near the same amount of powder, plus it's milder on your shoulder. some guys don't care about that but I do. get a good fixed 24x scope, you'll thank me later

Vern O'Brien's Guide in Alaska killed a grizzly with a 17 Mach IV, a 17 hmr on deer seems reasonable as long as you choose your shots. As they say in all the small calibers on deer threads, "Shot placement is critical."

If I had to choose a small caliber [bleep] hit the fan caliber I’m leaning towards the 17hmr over the 22 although ammo availability is better for the 22. I know of four deer taken with the 17 that were DRT and a 1000lb steer. It’s just a awesome little cartridge

Lots of folks relied on the 22 CB short for whitetails until the ammo shortage hit, now it's easier to get 22 LR, so ya lots of meat damage, esp. with a shoulder hit inside 200yds.
I would have got him too but a Dad Blam snow flake hit me in da eye....
