Why do eastern coyotes appear to be so much tougher to call than their western cousins ?

Because they have more cover and concealment to help them remain unseen by the person calling them?

I don't know why, but I have experienced the same thing. While living in Texas, I could call coyotes across huge pastures, small woodlots, power line cuts or wherever, with pretty good success.

Here in Virginia(Suffolk, and the Eastern Shore), it seems like they never want to break the thick cover. We have gone in for the close up hunts in the thick stuff. But when we have, we get busted before we even see them!

It's still fun, but I sure do miss coyote hunting in Texas!

Population numbers would be my guess. At one time Arizona estimated the number of coyotes there to number upwards of 750,000. Missouri estimated about 250,000 in the show me state. Eastern coastal states had a much lower population density than even Missouri.

When I first started calling coyotes here in Kentucky about 15 years ago, I had very good luck. Then, as more people got into hunting them, it became harder and harder to call one up. The east is much more heavily populated than the west, which means more people hunting, which in turn means more coyotes being educated. There are some places that I hunt where it is next to impossible to call one up, as they have been hunted so hard, that they're just not going to respond to a call. The farms here are small in size compared to the western states, and given the size of a coyote's territory, they can use a number of these farms. So, you have no idea just how hard the hunting pressure on them can be.

cover, security population densities all play a part. people think they hear a bunch of coyotes so they think there a ton of them on their property, not realizing that 2 dogs will make a ton of noise. I liken eastern coyote hunting to bobcat hunting. IE: if i am hunting fox and mainly after fox I change stands after 20 minutes. bobcats i will set a stgand for 45 inutes to an hour. i also trya dn set up where they will approach and feel safe. one of my best tricks is hunting river edges from a boat.
