My .340 Wby Accumark will shoot one-hole groups all day long, but only if let the barrel cool between shots. It's more accuracy than needed, but I don't mind it.

Note that I did not say that I could do it all day long, but the rifle can.

The fact remains that many shooters are far too much perfectionists. The lung area of a deer/antelope is about a 12" target. One does not need a one-hole rifle to hit a 12" target - those unspoken phrases included.

We tend to ask "what group do I need at so-and-so range?" when the question that ought to be asked is "What is the longest range I can shoot with a rifle that groups x?" I am often derided for the suggestion that half a lung decides that - but it is the right answer. For a 12" lung, the range at which your rifle shoots a 6" group is your maximum shooting range for that species of animal. It's that simple.

It's that simple only if you hold perfectly dead center of that 12" lung.. what if you wiggle a little and the crosshairs are 2" right of center? If your antelope is facing left he could have a hole in the guts.

All of the rifles that I load for are capable of sub-moa groups so that is what I try to achieve. It’s not required for big game hunting at normal ranges.

My eyes, concentration, and muscles/ bones aint what they used to be.

I cant shoot as well as I used to.

Learned to accept it. No groundhogs around anymore so accuracy needs not as stringent.

Still like chit to be sub MOA but up close will tolerate bigger.

Gun fit w bad neck and spine is way more critical than accuracy nowadays. I demand comfy.

The people that howl out the words "1 hole groups all day long" are just that, usually just words.
I have a few rifles that will shoot close to one hole, but not all day long. Usually a couple of 3 shot groups close to touching and I'm happy.

When I get my loads and rifles to shoot like that, the rifle becomes less interesting and I move on to the next one. If it's a bolt action usually I can
figure things out & tweak rifle and loads and get it to shoot. But not all day long, maybe a 3 shot group or 2.

AR"s same deal, but usually I like long range shooting better, gongs, clods, clumps, rocks and any varmints I run into on the farm where I live.

What I really like doing is getting my lever actions to shoot nice round groups. Rimfire and centerfire. Now that's a chore I really enjoy.

I would have got him too but a Dad Blam snow flake hit me in da eye....

I've owned quite a few production and semi-custom rifles as well as a few full custom's that others had commissioned and then sent down the road. I know, in my old age, that I do not seem to have the ability to concentrate that I did when I was younger.

Having said that, in the last 30 years that I have been reloading for hunting, using rifles described above to kill stuff, and developing loads for that purpose, I've found that for me, one hole groups at any time are an anomaly, much less all day long?

What is your expectation/experience in that regard, and what do you consider acceptable accuracy for hunting, say 300 yds. and under??

Asking for me, not a friend.

This thread made my day! It's refreshing to see that others are like myself and struggle to consistently achieve those tiny "internet groups" that so many boast of.

When I was a kid many of the old timers were perfectly happy to hit a pie plate (crammed under the twine of a bale of hay) twice in a row at a hundred paces while shooting across the hood of a pick-up. A lot of those guys shot more deer, antelope, and elk than I ever will. Their 30-30's, 06's, and 300 Savages got the job done.

I've sent more than a few good rifles down the road because I couldn't get 'em to shoot under an inch and a quarter.

Ahhhh.... the price of looneyism....

I figure that once a guy gets into handloading, he's liable to fall down into the accuracy rabbithole. I'm inextricably caught in that trap myself, but I see it as an endeavor that is separate from hunting. I'll hunt with a rifle that I think should and would be more accurate if I could find the magic recipe and succeed anyway. They're just two different pursuits and I'm okay with it.

I’ve never had problems getting one hole groups with anything I shoot......it’s usually the second shot that opens the group! grin memtb

Ever since I went to 5 shot groups, those 1 ragged hole targets get harder to come by all day any day.

I've gotten some nice groups with my heavier boltguns, 308s with Rem Varmint barrels, and a heavy 30-06 with a Douglas #7 contour. Not 'all day long' though.

What I consider to be a one-hole group. And on that day even this group was too big. IIRC it got beat by .030" 😭

Ive got a few rifles with the best barrels...Kreiger, Douglas, and Lilja. they are one-hole rifles.....Unfortunately I've never been a "one-hole shooter in many aspects"

They’re all 1/2 MOA... when you consider the “called flyers”
